NafisaVictor Wanyama has revealed he would relish a return to Celtic, this time in a coaching role, as he begins the next chapter of his career and he has pointed to a surprising influence that many supporters may not have expected.
The former Hoops favourite is currently progressing through his coaching qualifications and is due to sit his UEFA A Licence exams next month, having already completed his B Licence.
He has not featured for a club since quietly departing Dunfermline in the summer after signing a six month deal with Neil Lennon’s side.
“I have exams for UEFA A License next month.
“I have done my UEFA B and would love to start my coaching journey in Scotland with Celtic.
“Coaching is part of the things that are good for any footballer. Not everyone would want to coach but they can join anything related to the game.”
He was then asked which manager had the biggest impact on him and his answer may raise a few eyebrows and stir some strong reactions…
“All the coaches that coached me, the likes of Mauricio [Pochettino] and also Ronald [Koeman]…
“I would say my last coach at Montreal. His name was Will, Wilfried Nancy. I’ve seen him grow as a coach, and he really, really taught me a lot.
“And from then, I was learning from him, and I saw I can also learn and make my own history, like what he has done for that club at that time.”
There is no denying Nancy had a distinctive approach that he brought to his teams. In a different season, with a stronger group of players, it perhaps could have worked out for the coach.
There was a clear identity in his attacking philosophy, but the less said about the defensive side of the game, the better.
Victor Wanyama clearly has his focus set on a future in the dugout and ultimately, a return to Celtic.
But the route he takes to get there might not be the one many supporters had anticipated.
