NafisaChris Sutton fired back at Simon Jordan on X after Celtic clinched another dramatic Premiership title under Martin O’Neill on Saturday.
The former Celtic striker reacted after Jordan downplayed the outcome of the Scottish title race shortly after Celtic’s comeback victory over Hearts at Celtic Park.
Jordan posted that it was “a shame for Scottish football” that Hearts had fallen short and claimed there was “nothing exciting or new” about Celtic winning the league again.
The timing of the comment immediately triggered frustration among Celtic supporters given the intensity of the title race and the chaos surrounding the final day.
Celtic had begun the afternoon trailing Hearts in the table and were 1-0 down in the first half before battling back to win 3-1 through goals from Arne Engels, Daizen Maeda and Callum Osmand.
Martin O’Neill’s side had spent weeks chasing Hearts after appearing out of the title picture earlier in the season following the defeat at Tannadice. The resurgence included late drama against Motherwell and another frantic finish against Hearts on Saturday.
Jordan’s post prompted a strong response from Sutton, who clearly took issue with the broader dismissal of Scottish football as well as the remarks coming on the day O’Neill had just secured another title at Celtic Park.
Sutton replied directly to Jordan on X after the match.
The exchange carried added tension given the relationship between Sutton and O’Neill. The pair worked closely during O’Neill’s first spell at Celtic and remain very close, with O’Neill emotionally praising Sutton during his post-match interviews after the title win.
Saturday also did not resemble a routine title triumph.
Hearts pushed Celtic right to the closing minutes of the season and were still within reach of the trophy before Maeda’s late winner changed everything at Celtic Park.
By stoppage time supporters were already spilling onto the pitch after Osmand’s goal sealed the championship.
For anyone inside Celtic Park, it felt like anything but boring.
