Survival in the Premier League was always the primary objective after promotion, but now the conversation has shifted towards progression, ambition and whether the Whites can establish themselves as more than just another side fighting to stay afloat.
There is a growing sense around Elland Road that the foundations have finally been laid. Daniel Farke’s side showed resilience throughout the campaign and, despite experiencing difficult moments, ultimately secured a respectable 14th-place finish in their first season back among England’s elite.
That achievement has naturally strengthened expectations heading into the coming months. Supporters want to see the club build momentum rather than stand still, while the ownership group faces increasing pressure to ensure Leeds continue moving forward rather than settling for mediocrity.
The financial rewards of Premier League survival have also placed the club in a far stronger position than they were 12 months ago. With substantial revenue arriving through league prize money and broadcasting distributions, attention is now turning towards how much of those funds will be reinvested into strengthening the squad.
49ers prepared to back Daniel Farke:
According to former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Leeds United’s 49ers ownership group are prepared to inject an additional £70million into the club’s transfer budget ahead of the upcoming window.
The West Yorkshire outfit secured approximately £144m in Premier League prize money after ending the 2025/26 campaign in 14th position, giving the club significant financial flexibility heading into the summer.
Leeds eye ‘tweaks’ rather than major rebuild:
Wyness – who served as Everton CEO between 2004 and 2009 and now operates a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes Leeds are not planning a dramatic overhaul of their squad.
Instead, he feels the club’s hierarchy will focus on targeted additions rather than widespread changes, believing the current group already possesses a solid platform to build from.
As a result, he suggested Leeds are unlikely to dedicate the entirety of their Premier League earnings towards transfers, choosing instead to maintain stability across other areas of the club.
Speaking on Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness explained:
“I would expect Leeds, if they’re being clever, to be looking at maybe between 30 to 50 per cent of that money being spent on strengthening the squad. think that’s where it’s got to go.
“They’ve got to look at longer-term issues at least to give stability and go forward. I think they’ve got enough of a squad right now where it can be a few tweaks and changes without having to go wholesale.
“I’d expect somewhere between the £50-70m mark would be where they’d be going, and I think they’ll now trust Farke to work on the squad and to get that right in the way it’s going forward.”
What positions are Leeds targeting?
The recruitment strategy already appears to be taking shape behind the scenes.
Wyness previously told Football Insider that Leeds are eager to bolster their attacking options this summer, with additional firepower viewed as a key objective before next season begins.
While Dominic Calvert-Lewin delivered important contributions throughout the campaign, there is a belief that he requires greater support if Leeds are to push higher up the table and challenge for positions beyond mid-table security.
Several other areas are also being assessed.
Goalkeeper remains a significant concern following Lucas Perri’s inconsistent performances, while midfield depth continues to be another priority despite the positive impact made by players such as Anton Stach and Sean Longstaff during the season.
Farke is reportedly determined to add more competition throughout the spine of the team, ensuring Leeds possess the depth and quality required to compete over a demanding Premier League schedule.
With the backing of the 49ers seemingly secured and a sizeable budget potentially available, the coming weeks could provide a clear indication of just how ambitious Leeds United intend to be as they prepare for the next chapter under Daniel Farke.
