NafisaThe fallout from Celtic’s chaotic 3-2 win over Motherwell at Fir Park continues to dominate Scottish football, with referee John Beaton finding himself right at the centre of a storm that has exploded across the country.
The Premiership title race was turned upside down on Wednesday night after Celtic were awarded an incredibly controversial stoppage-time penalty deep into the closing seconds of the match.
Motherwell had looked set to grab a dramatic point after Liam Gordon’s late equaliser made it 2-2 and left Hearts firmly in control of the title race heading into the final weekend.
But in the 97th minute, everything changed.
A long throw into the Motherwell box sparked panic inside the area before Celtic defender Auston Trusty challenged for the ball alongside Sam Nicholson. Moments later, referee John Beaton was instructed to head to the pitchside monitor after VAR spotted a possible handball offence.
After a brief review, Beaton pointed to the spot.
The decision immediately triggered disbelief around Fir Park, with Motherwell players surrounding the referee while supporters inside the stadium reacted furiously to the call.

With pressure building rapidly on the officials involved, many supporters expected the Scottish FA to quietly remove John Beaton from this weekend’s fixtures or at the very least stand him down temporarily while the controversy cooled.
Instead, the SFA have now made a completely unexpected call.
Despite the furious backlash surrounding the Fir Park drama, Beaton has not been suspended or removed from duty. In fact, the experienced referee has immediately been handed another Premiership appointment for the final day of the season.
However, in a move that has already sparked fresh debate online, the SFA have noticeably avoided placing him anywhere near the explosive Celtic vs Hearts title decider at Celtic Park.
Instead, Beaton has been assigned to officiate Dundee FC vs Aberdeen FC, while Don Robertson takes charge of the title showdown in Glasgow.
Many fans are now interpreting the decision as the SFA attempting to quietly protect Beaton from even more pressure while still publicly backing their official after the storm at Fir Park.
Others believe the appointment itself proves the governing body sees no issue whatsoever with the penalty decision that has now become one of the most fiercely debated moments of the Scottish football season.
Either way, the controversy refuses to die down.
With the title race still hanging in the balance and tensions already at boiling point heading into Saturday, Scottish football now heads into one of the most explosive final weekends in recent memory.
