NafisaJoe Gelhardt’s Leeds United story has officially come to an end, with the striker completing a permanent return to Hull City after playing a major role in the Tigers’ promotion-winning campaign.
The 24-year-old has now put pen to paper on a long-term contract at the MKM Stadium, bringing the curtain down on his five-year association with Leeds and giving him the opportunity to continue his career in the Premier League with the club where he rediscovered his best form.
Hull have agreed a deal worth £6.5million plus add-ons for the English forward, while Gelhardt has signed a four-year contract that will keep him at the club until 2030, with the move expected to run into the 2030/31 season.
It represents a significant moment for a player whose career appeared to be at a crossroads only 12 months ago.
Leeds had high hopes for Gelhardt when they signed him from Wigan Athletic in 2020, reportedly paying around £1m for the highly-rated youngster. He had already developed a reputation as one of the most exciting young forwards outside the Premier League and was expected to become a major player at Elland Road.
Things never quite worked out that way.
Gelhardt showed flashes of his ability in a Leeds shirt but struggled to establish himself as a regular starter. As competition for places increased, his opportunities became increasingly limited, eventually leading to another loan move away from Yorkshire.

Gelhardt never managed to establish himself as a dependable first-choice option for Leeds, and his situation became increasingly difficult as the club’s attacking options evolved.
Loan spells eventually became necessary, with Hull providing the environment where he finally produced the kind of numbers expected of him.
His return to the Tigers has therefore made sense for all parties.
Leeds receive a sizeable transfer fee for a player who was no longer central to Daniel Farke’s plans, while Hull get a proven attacking player who already understands the club, the manager’s expectations and the supporters.
Gelhardt also gets something perhaps even more important: stability.

The biggest question now is whether Gelhardt can replicate his Championship form at Premier League level.
His return to the top flight is particularly interesting because he has already experienced Premier League football with Leeds, although he was never able to establish himself as a regular.
This time, the circumstances are completely different.
He arrives at Hull as a player who has just scored 14 league goals and helped secure promotion.
There is confidence behind him, regular football should be available and the supporters already know exactly what he can bring.
His ability to operate as a striker, second striker or from a wider position could also prove valuable for Hull as they prepare for the demands of another Premier League campaign.
The step up will undoubtedly be significant, but Gelhardt has earned the right to test himself again.
For Hull supporters, this is the return of a promotion hero.
For Leeds, it is the end of a frustrating story involving a player who never quite fulfilled his enormous potential in Yorkshire.
