NafisaThe leaked letter from FIFA president Gianni Infantino has reignited debate over Argentina’s controversial World Cup campaign, with fresh questions being asked about FIFA’s relationship with the reigning world champions.
While investigations into the chaotic World Cup final are still ongoing, a private message sent by Infantino to Argentine Football Association president Claudio Tapia has emerged publicly, praising Argentina’s “professionalism” and “magnificent performance” throughout the tournament.
The timing of the message has raised eyebrows across the football world.
Argentina’s tournament ended amid a storm of controversy after the World Cup final against Spain descended into chaos.
The Albiceleste failed to register a shot on target during normal time, Enzo Fernández was sent off after receiving two yellow cards, and a mass confrontation involving players from both sides erupted following the final whistle. FIFA has since been reviewing the incidents from that match.
Despite those events, Infantino’s message struck an overwhelmingly positive tone.
In the leaked letter, later verified by the Daily Mail, the FIFA president wrote:
“I would like to reiterate my most sincere congratulations for this important new result for Argentine soccer.
“The FIFA World Cup 2026 will remain in memory as an unforgettable celebration of football, marked by spectacular matches, the irruption of new promises, the presence of the great figures of the sport and the extraordinary atmosphere lived in stadiums full of fans.
“The magnificent performance of the Albiceleste also contributed decisively to making this edition an exceptional event that captivated millions of football enthusiasts around the world.
“Please send my sincere congratulations to all who have contributed to this magnificent result: to the players, to coach Lionel Scaloni, as well as to the coaching and medical staff and, of course, to the many fans who have accompanied and encouraged the team throughout the competition.
“These victories are always the fruit of constant work, professionalism and attention to detail, but also of passion, commitment and love for this wonderful sport. All this augurs a very promising future and, without a doubt, will pave the way for new and great successes for Argentine football.
“I wish you, dear Mr. President, all the best for the next competitions and I hope to see you again very soon. With all my friendship, Gianni Infantino.”
The letter has sparked criticism because it surfaced while FIFA continues to examine several incidents involving Argentina during the tournament.
One of the biggest talking points came after the World Cup semi-final victory over England, when Argentina players celebrated with a banner displaying the political message “Las Malvinas son Argentinas” (“The Falkland Islands are Argentine”). FIFA later took action over the political display, reaffirming its regulations prohibiting political messages at official competitions.
The controversy did not end there.
During the final against Spain, Enzo Fernández was dismissed after collecting two yellow cards, while an ugly post-match confrontation involving Leandro Paredes, Gavi and several other players overshadowed the closing moments of the tournament.
Earlier in the competition, accusations of preferential treatment towards Argentina also circulated widely across social media and sections of the international media. Those claims were firmly rejected by FIFA’s head of refereeing, Pierluigi Collina, who insisted officials had applied the Laws of the Game consistently throughout the tournament.
The publication of Infantino’s congratulatory letter has nevertheless fuelled further debate among supporters, particularly given the number of disciplinary issues surrounding Argentina during the competition.
For now, FIFA’s disciplinary investigations remain separate from the president’s personal message, and no suggestion has been made that the letter has any influence over ongoing proceedings.
However, with scrutiny surrounding Argentina’s World Cup campaign refusing to fade, the leaked correspondence has once again placed both FIFA and the world champions firmly back in the spotlight.
