Contract negotiations can sometimes stretch on for weeks, particularly when international duty interrupts discussions. However, clubs are often forced to draw a line if an agreement cannot be reached, especially as pre-season preparations gather pace.
That has now proven to be the case at Tynecastle, where one familiar face will not be returning for another season despite efforts to keep him at the club.
Hearts have officially confirmed that Cammy Devlin will leave the Edinburgh side after failing to accept the club’s offer of a new contract before an internal deadline expired.
The energetic midfielder became a free agent following the expiration of his previous deal, although Hearts had presented him with improved terms in an effort to secure his long-term future.
The Scottish Premiership outfit even granted Devlin additional time to consider the proposal after he travelled to represent Australia at the FIFA World Cup.
Although the 28-year-old earned a place in the Socceroos squad, he did not feature during the tournament as Australia advanced to the Round of 32 before suffering a penalty shoot-out defeat against Egypt on July 3.
A week after Australia’s exit, Hearts have now confirmed that Devlin will move on after failing to respond before the club’s deadline.
In an official statement, Hearts said:
“Heart of Midlothian can confirm that Cammy Devlin will not be returning to the club.
“Cammy was given a deadline by the club to commit to taking up the offer of a new deal, which he has failed to meet, and therefore leaves under freedom of contract.
“Cammy joined Hearts in August 2021 and would go on to make 176 appearances in maroon, scoring eight goals. The club thanks Cammy for his time at Tynecastle Park.”
Devlin arrived in Edinburgh from Newcastle Jets in 2021 and quickly established himself as one of the club’s most dependable midfield performers.
Across four seasons, he accumulated 176 appearances, contributing eight goals while becoming a favourite among the Hearts support thanks to his relentless work rate and combative style.
His departure is expected to attract significant attention across several leagues, with the experienced midfielder now available without a transfer fee.
One destination already linked with the Australian is Rangers, where former Hearts boss Derek McInnes recently took charge after making the move to Ibrox.
Speculation surrounding that possibility has intensified following McInnes’ decision to reunite with former Hearts captain Lawrence Shankland, prompting suggestions that another familiar face could follow.
Interest has also reportedly emerged from clubs in Major League Soccer, the Turkish Super Lig, and England’s Championship, leaving Devlin with several potential options as he considers the next step in his career.
After four memorable years in maroon, the midfielder now begins a fresh chapter, while Hearts turn their focus towards rebuilding their squad ahead of the new Scottish Premiership campaign.
