NafisaDerek McInnes has continued his Rangers rebuild by making another important addition behind the scenes, with the Ibrox club officially confirming the arrival of Simon Ireland as their new first-team set-piece coach.
The appointment comes after Scott Fry departed Rangers to join Birmingham City, with McInnes moving quickly to fill the vacancy ahead of the new campaign.
Rangers announced the move on their official X account, confirming that Ireland has joined the men’s first-team coaching staff with immediate effect and will take his place on the bench for the pre-season clash against Saint-Étienne.
The club said: “Simon Ireland has today joined our men’s first-team as Set Piece Coach. He begins work immediately and will be on the bench for this evening’s Ibrox friendly with St-Etienne.”
Ireland arrives after leaving League Two side Barrow at the end of last season and brings extensive experience from English football, having previously worked as a set-piece coach at Huddersfield Town, while also holding coaching roles with Nottingham Forest and Brighton.
His arrival marks the latest addition to Derek McInnes’ backroom revolution since taking charge at Ibrox.
McInnes has already brought trusted assistants Alan Archibald and Paul Sheerin with him from Hearts, added Craig Clark after his departure from Kilmarnock, while Rangers legend Allan McGregor recently returned to the club as goalkeeping coach.
With Simon Ireland now officially through the door, Rangers have completed another key appointment as McInnes continues reshaping both his squad and coaching staff ahead of what the club hopes will be a major title challenge this season.
