Ben Jacobs confirms Leeds United to complete record breaking signing to Elland Road after player SNUBS Manchester and picks Leeds as his next team

Leeds United’s pursuit of James Trafford is gathering serious momentum, with fresh reports suggesting the England goalkeeper has made it clear he wants the move to Elland Road.

Daniel Farke has already strengthened key areas of his squad this summer, but the search for a new first-choice goalkeeper has remained one of the club’s biggest priorities. Now, after weeks of speculation, Leeds appear closer than ever to landing the Manchester City shot-stopper in what could become the biggest transfer in the club’s history.

Trafford has emerged as the Whites’ dream target following Karl Darlow’s departure, with Leeds determined to secure a goalkeeper capable of becoming one of the Premier League’s finest over the coming years.

According to transfer journalist Ben Jacobs, talks are progressing well between all parties and Trafford has indicated that he wants to join Leeds United. However, one significant detail has emerged during negotiations that could divide opinion among supporters.

Release clause discussions emerge

The latest reports claim discussions have also centred around the inclusion of a future release clause in Trafford’s contract.

While no final agreement has been reached, the proposal has naturally sparked debate among Leeds supporters. A release clause could potentially make it easier for one of Europe’s elite clubs to sign Trafford in the future if he fulfils the enormous potential many believe he possesses.

At just 23, Trafford is already regarded as one of England’s brightest young goalkeepers. Many expect him to eventually succeed Jordan Pickford as England’s number one, meaning interest from Champions League clubs would almost certainly arrive if he shines at Elland Road.

Should Leeds meet Manchester City’s reported valuation of around £40 million, Trafford would become the most expensive signing in the club’s history, surpassing the fee previously paid for Georginio Rutter.

While some supporters may feel disappointed by suggestions of a release clause, others will recognise it as a realistic compromise needed to attract one of Europe’s most highly-rated young goalkeepers.

Leeds still stand to benefit

Even if such a clause is eventually included, Leeds would almost certainly ensure it is set at a figure well above the transfer fee they pay this summer.

That would leave the Whites in a strong financial position should Trafford eventually move on, allowing the club to reinvest a significant profit into the squad.

In the meantime, Leeds would secure a goalkeeper capable of transforming the team immediately.

Trafford’s composure with the ball at his feet, outstanding shot-stopping ability and confidence under pressure make him an ideal fit for Daniel Farke’s style of football. His arrival would also provide Leeds with stability in one of the most important positions on the pitch as they prepare for another demanding Premier League campaign.

Bigger ambitions at Elland Road

There is also another possibility that excites Leeds supporters.

If Trafford arrives and the club continue progressing under Farke and the 49ers ownership, Elland Road could become a destination capable of matching the goalkeeper’s ambitions.

Rather than viewing Leeds as a stepping stone, Trafford could become one of the faces of the club’s long-term project should the Whites establish themselves as consistent Premier League contenders and eventually challenge for European football.

Even if a future move does happen, Leeds would still benefit from having one of England’s finest young goalkeepers during some of the most important years of the club’s rebuild.

For many supporters, the priority remains simple.

Whether Trafford stays for three seasons before earning a huge transfer, or spends the next decade becoming one of the club’s greatest-ever goalkeepers, getting the deal completed would represent a huge statement of intent from Leeds United.

With negotiations continuing to gather pace, Elland Road may not have to wait much longer before welcoming what could become the biggest signing of the summer.
