Leeds United could face an uncomfortable January decision with one of their promotion heroes potentially pushing for an Elland Road exit if his situation does not improve over the coming months.
Daniel Farke’s side have made an unbeaten start to their Premier League campaign, collecting nine points from their opening five matches and giving supporters plenty of encouragement after returning to the top flight.
But while the results have provided plenty of positivity, there are already questions developing over the futures of players who have found themselves further down the pecking order.
One of those concerns surrounds a player who played an important role in Leeds’ promotion campaign and has remained a familiar figure at Elland Road.
With the January transfer window approaching, Leeds could soon find themselves having to deal with a situation they would rather avoid.
Leeds promotion hero set to force his way out of Elland Road
Dan James is reportedly facing an uncertain future at Leeds after struggling for regular minutes at the beginning of the season.
The Wales international has seen his opportunities reduced as Farke has turned to other attacking options, leaving the 28-year-old with a difficult decision to make if his situation remains unchanged.
According to Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke, Leeds have no desire to actively push James towards the exit door.
However, that stance could ultimately count for little if the player decides that regular first-team football is more important than remaining at Elland Road.
O’Rourke said: “I don’t think they’ll be keen to cash in on James as they’re going to need a big squad this season. Daniel Farke won’t want to weaken his squad.
“If the player wants regular first-team football, he might seek a move elsewhere, but I don’t think Leeds will necessarily be pushing him out the door.”
That leaves Leeds in a potentially awkward position.
The club can make it clear that James remains part of Farke’s plans and refuse to actively look for a buyer, but the player himself could still decide that a move is necessary if he continues to spend more time on the bench.
Can Leeds hold on to Dan James?
The biggest question heading into January may therefore not be whether Leeds want to sell James, but whether James wants to remain.
His position is particularly interesting given his history with the club.
James was part of the Leeds side that secured promotion and has since established himself as an experienced member of the squad. His pace and ability to stretch opposition defences remain valuable qualities, particularly in a Premier League campaign where squad depth can become crucial.
Yet at 28, another season spent waiting for opportunities would represent a significant concern for the winger.
Regular football is likely to be an important consideration, particularly with James still representing Wales and competition for attacking places at Leeds continuing to increase.
If his minutes improve during the weeks ahead, the January speculation could quickly disappear.
But if Farke continues to favour other options and James remains on the fringes, the situation could become increasingly difficult to manage.
Leeds are under no obvious pressure to cash in on him. In fact, O’Rourke’s comments suggest the opposite: the club would prefer to retain the player because of the demands of competing across a long Premier League season.
That could leave the decision largely in James’ hands.
Should he conclude that his career requires more regular first-team football, Leeds may have to consider an exit even if it is not what Farke or the club want.
For now, there is no indication that Leeds are actively trying to sell their promotion hero.
But if nothing changes between now and January, the pressure could come from inside the squad rather than from the boardroom — and that could make James’ future one of the more interesting Leeds stories to watch when the winter window opens.
