NafisaLeeds United endured a busy summer transfer window, with Daniel Farke making significant changes to his squad as he prepares his side for another demanding Premier League campaign.
A number of players were allowed to move on after it became increasingly clear that they would not form part of the manager’s plans going forward. The club’s recruitment was focused on raising the overall quality of the squad, meaning several familiar faces eventually found themselves looking for new opportunities elsewhere.
The final days of the window were particularly busy at Elland Road, with Leeds saying goodbye to two more attacking players as the deadline approached.
Largie Ramazani completed his move to Burnley, while Willy Gnonto also departed, joining Fiorentina on loan. Their exits further altered the look of an attacking group that had already undergone considerable change during the summer.
There were also departures in other areas of the squad.
Lucas Perri was another player whose Leeds career appeared to be heading towards an inevitable conclusion after the club moved decisively to address its goalkeeping position. The arrival of James Trafford meant that Perri faced an uphill battle to reclaim his place, eventually leading to a loan move to Torino.
The Brazilian has now begun his new chapter in Italy.
Unfortunately for the 28-year-old, his first competitive appearance for Torino could hardly have gone much worse.
Lucas Perri at fault for costly goal on Torino debut:
Perri made his Torino debut in the Coppa Italia yesterday as they faced Monza, but the occasion ended in disappointment after his new side suffered a 1-0 defeat.
The only goal of the game arrived shortly before half-time, and it was a moment that Perri will undoubtedly want to forget as quickly as possible.
A low cross was delivered from the left before Dany Mota got a touch towards goal. The resulting effort was travelling towards the near post, with Perri already positioned in the area where you would expect a goalkeeper to deal comfortably with the danger.
Instead, the ball somehow found its way through him.
It was the sort of situation where the goalkeeper would have been expected to make the save, particularly given that the shot was heading directly towards the position he was occupying.
But Perri was unable to keep it out.
The mistake proved costly because Torino never managed to find a response. What could have been a promising start to life in Italy instead ended with Perri conceding the decisive goal in a narrow cup defeat.
Naturally, Leeds supporters will now be keeping an eye on how his loan spell develops.
Don’t be surprised to see Lucas Perri back at Leeds
Torino have a buy option included in Perri’s loan agreement, meaning there is still a route for the Brazilian to make his move permanent next summer.
However, after what was an extremely difficult debut, Leeds fans who were already sceptical about the possibility of Torino triggering that clause may have even more reason to question whether the Italian club will ultimately decide to keep him.
One poor performance, of course, should not define an entire loan spell.
Perri will have plenty of opportunities to respond and establish himself in Italy, and Leeds will certainly hope that is exactly what happens. The ideal scenario for the club would be for the goalkeeper to rediscover the confidence and consistency that made Leeds willing to spend heavily on him in the first place.
But there is already a significant amount of scepticism surrounding his future at Elland Road.
Perri arrived from Lyon for a reported £15.6million last year, but his time at Leeds failed to develop as many had hoped. He struggled to produce the consistency required between the posts and was regularly criticised for goals conceded, while his distribution also became a source of frustration.
That ultimately contributed to Leeds looking for another solution in goal this summer.
The arrival of Trafford has now pushed Perri further down the pecking order, making his Torino loan particularly important. If he can put the difficult debut behind him and produce a strong season in Italy, Torino may yet decide that he is worth keeping.
From Leeds’ perspective, that would be the perfect outcome.
A successful loan spell followed by a permanent transfer would allow the club to draw a line under a disappointing chapter while also recovering some value from one of its major investments.
But if performances like the one against Monza continue, Torino may have little incentive to exercise their option.
For now, Perri has time to change the narrative.
Leeds supporters will certainly hope he does, because the last thing the club needs is to find itself dealing with another difficult decision over the goalkeeper next summer.
If things do not improve in Italy, however, the possibility of Perri returning to West Yorkshire cannot be ruled out — potentially leaving Leeds with the task of finding yet another club willing to take him.
