Lewis Ferguson has sent Rangers supporters into a frenzy after revealing that playing for the Ibrox club remains one of his biggest ambitions.
The Scotland international has been linked with a return to Glasgow at various points, although a move has never appeared particularly close to materialising.
Ferguson has instead continued to build an impressive career in Italy, establishing himself as an important figure at Bologna and taking on greater responsibility with each passing season.
The midfielder has now made 135 appearances for the Serie A club and has even captained them in European competition.
His progress has been particularly impressive given the serious knee injury that threatened to interrupt his development.
Rather than allowing that setback to derail his career, Ferguson returned strongly and featured 41 times across Serie A and the Europa League last season.
His performances have naturally attracted attention elsewhere.
And while Rangers supporters have continued to dream about seeing the midfielder back at Ibrox, previous comments from his representative appeared to put a major dent in those hopes.
Ferguson’s agent previously appeared to rule Rangers out:

Some weeks ago, comments from Ferguson’s agent suggested that the midfielder’s immediate preference would be either a move to England or remaining in Italy.
That appeared significant because it seemingly placed Rangers further down the list of realistic destinations.
Given Ferguson’s development and the level he is now playing at, it would be understandable if clubs in England and Italy were prepared to offer him a more attractive financial and sporting opportunity.
For Rangers, therefore, the situation looked fairly straightforward.
They could admire Ferguson from a distance, but actually bringing him back to Ibrox would be another matter entirely.
Then Ferguson himself was asked about Rangers.
And his response changed the conversation completely.
Lewis Ferguson reveals his Rangers dream
Speaking to Corriere dello Sport, Ferguson was asked about his future and whether he had considered renewing his Bologna contract.
The 26-year-old insisted that contracts were not currently occupying his thoughts.
“I haven’t thought about a renewal. My focus right now is football; I don’t want to think about contracts or anything else. Then, if there’s something to discuss, we’ll talk.”
But it was what came next that will have caught the attention of everyone connected with Rangers.
Ferguson was asked about his relationship with the Ibrox club.
His answer could hardly have been clearer.

“It’s my favourite team, and I’ve always said I want to play for Rangers. One day, though I don’t know when yet, it will definitely happen if I get the chance.”
That is a remarkable admission from a player who is currently established at a Champions League-level club in one of Europe’s major leagues.
Ferguson has not simply acknowledged an affection for Rangers.
He has openly stated that playing for the club is something he expects to happen if the opportunity eventually presents itself.
Glasgow remains home for Ferguson
The midfielder also spoke warmly about his connection with Glasgow and explained why Bologna has nevertheless become an important part of his life.
“It’s my second home now. Glasgow, where I grew up, was my first, but here I immediately felt welcomed by everyone. My family is also here; my second daughter was born in Bologna and is called Lorena, an Italian name.
“I liked it, and it’s in honour of Lauren, my sister, who died before I was born.”
Those comments underline just how settled Ferguson has become in Italy.
Bologna is no longer simply another stop in his career.
It has become home for his family as well.
That could make any immediate return to Scotland more complicated.
Rangers may still have to wait
For all the excitement Ferguson’s comments will generate among Rangers supporters, there is an important reality that cannot be ignored.
The midfielder remains under contract at Bologna until 2028, with the Italian club also holding an option to extend the agreement by another year.
That gives Bologna considerable control over his future.
His performances have also ensured that Ferguson is now a far more valuable player than he was when he left Scotland.
English and Italian clubs could potentially offer him a significant financial package, while another move within Europe’s major leagues could represent the next step in his development.
Bologna have already demonstrated their ability to develop players before selling them on for major fees.
Dan Ndoye, Joshua Zirkzee and Riccardo Calafiori are among the players who have used the club as a springboard towards bigger moves.
Ferguson could potentially follow the same path.
But Rangers now have something important on their side:
Even if a move to Ibrox does not happen soon, Rangers have been given something they did not have before.
A direct admission from Ferguson himself that the club remains his favourite and that he wants to play there one day.
That changes the dynamics considerably.
Rangers may have to wait until the circumstances are right, particularly with Ferguson’s contract situation and the possibility of interest from England or elsewhere in Europe.
But the door has clearly not been closed.
In fact, Ferguson has effectively left it open himself.
For a club that has spent years watching Scottish players leave home and build careers abroad, the possibility of eventually bringing one of their own back to Ibrox will be hugely appealing.
The timing remains uncertain.
The desire, however, appears to be very real.
And if Ferguson eventually decides that his next chapter should begin back in Glasgow, Rangers supporters now know exactly which club he would love to represent.
