NafisaRangers’ transfer window has been relentless.
With the Scottish Premiership season now underway, Derek McInnes has shown no intention of slowing down his rebuild, continuing to reshape his squad as he looks to close the gap on Celtic and mount a serious title challenge.
Supporters have watched seven new faces arrive at Ibrox over the course of the summer, but the manager made it clear in recent days that his business was far from complete.
Following several departures and fresh funds becoming available, anticipation continued to build over who would become the next player to walk through the doors at the Rangers Training Centre.
Behind the scenes, negotiations had been progressing for several days, with club officials working to complete another deal before rival clubs could make their move.
Now those efforts have finally paid off.
Rangers have officially confirmed the arrival of Olwethu Makhanya, with the highly-rated defender signing a four-year contract at Ibrox, while the club also hold the option to extend the agreement by a further 12 months.
The 22-year-old arrives for a fee believed to be in the region of £3 million, becoming Derek McInnes’ eighth signing of an incredibly busy summer transfer window.
Makhanya arrives with an impressive reputation despite his young age.
The South African international was included in his country’s 2026 FIFA World Cup squad after making his senior international debut in May, while his performances at club level convinced Rangers that he possesses the qualities needed to thrive in Scottish football.
Speaking for the first time as a Rangers player, Makhanya admitted completing his move to Ibrox fulfils a lifelong ambition.
“I can’t even explain how I am feeling right now, it is honestly a big honour and a huge blessing for me to join such a big club with so much history. I can’t wait to get started.
“For me, it has always been a dream to play football in Europe, ever since I was a kid, so to be here is a dream come true.”
McInnes believes Rangers have secured one of the brightest young defensive prospects available and expects the new arrival to continue improving in Glasgow.
“We’re really pleased to bring Olwethu to the club. He’s a player we have watched closely, and we feel he has all the attributes to make a real impact here, while also continuing to develop his game.
“For someone so young, he’s already gained experience in different environments. He is a strong, physical and confident defender, and I look forward to seeing him settle into the squad and show what he is capable of as a Rangers player.”
The defender’s arrival also addresses one of Rangers’ biggest priorities heading into the new campaign.
With McInnes eager to strengthen his defensive options and add greater competition at the back, Makhanya’s combination of physicality, athleticism and international experience makes him another statement signing during what has already been one of the busiest transfer windows in recent memory.
And with eight new additions now through the door, Rangers supporters will hope Makhanya is another important piece of the puzzle as McInnes continues building a squad capable of competing for major honours this season.
