Rafael Leao to Leeds United looks to be a Done Deal after mega money verbal transfer bid bigger than James Trafford’s offer, but there’s ONE obstacle holding his move to Elland Road

Leeds United have already shown this summer that they are willing to operate at a level rarely seen during their recent transfer windows.

The Whites have broken their club transfer record to bring James Trafford back to Yorkshire, while Tarik Muharemovic and Harry Wilson have also arrived as Daniel Farke’s squad continues to take shape.

But there is still an appetite for something even more ambitious.

Leeds want another high-profile attacking player before the transfer window closes, and the latest name to emerge would certainly qualify.

The situation surrounding Rafael Leao has suddenly become particularly interesting, with developments elsewhere potentially opening a door for Leeds.

And while there is still plenty to overcome, the size of the reported proposal from Elland Road shows just how seriously the club are taking the possibility.

Leeds United make verbal Rafael Leao approach

According to Turkish journalist Reşat Can Özbudak, Leeds United have registered their interest in the AC Milan forward and have made a verbal offer worth around €50million for the Portugal international.

That would represent another enormous statement of intent from the Whites.

Leeds have already committed £45million to Trafford, with the goalkeeper’s deal potentially rising further through add-ons.

A €50million proposal for Leao would therefore sit comfortably in the same territory — and could potentially exceed the overall value of Leeds’ initial Trafford investment depending on the final exchange rate and structure.

However, this is not yet a completed transfer.

Far from it.

There is a major obstacle standing between Leao and Elland Road, and it has nothing to do with Leeds’ willingness to spend money on the transfer itself.

One major obstacle could derail the move

The biggest problem is understood to be Leao’s salary demands.

Özbudak reports that the attacker’s wage expectations are currently the biggest obstacle for both Leeds and Galatasaray, who are also interested in securing his services.

That could prove decisive.

Leao is one of the biggest names in Milan’s squad and has built a reputation as one of Europe’s most explosive attacking players.

His pace, dribbling ability and ability to operate from the left side make him an obvious attraction for clubs looking to add elite attacking quality.

But bringing that calibre of player to Elland Road would require more than simply agreeing a transfer fee with Milan.

The player’s financial expectations would also need to fit within Leeds’ structure.

And that is where the situation becomes complicated.

Galatasaray move also hits a snag

Leeds are not the only club attempting to take advantage of the uncertainty.

Galatasaray have also been pushing for Leao, but their pursuit has reportedly encountered difficulties of its own.

According to the latest update, the Turkish giants have seen their potential move hit a snag, with the player’s salary demands again emerging as the key stumbling block.

That could give Leeds an unexpected opportunity.

If Galatasaray are unable to satisfy Leao’s financial requirements, the race could remain open for other interested clubs.

Leeds would then have to convince the player that a move to the Premier League is worth making — and that could become the most important part of the negotiations.

Why Leeds are pushing for another attacking signing

The interest in Leao also makes sense when viewed against the current state of Farke’s squad.

Leeds have already strengthened significantly this summer, but there is still room for another major attacking addition.

The club have been linked with several wide players as they look to ensure Farke has enough quality and depth across the front line.

A player of Leao’s profile would take that ambition to an entirely different level.

The Portuguese forward has the kind of individual quality capable of changing matches on his own.

For a Leeds side looking to establish itself in the Premier League rather than simply survive, that sort of player would represent a huge upgrade in attacking firepower.

It would also send another message about the club’s ambitions following the Trafford deal.

The Trafford comparison says plenty

Leeds supporters have already witnessed the club make a major statement by spending up to £45million on Trafford.

That was a significant investment in a 23-year-old goalkeeper who Farke believes can eventually become one of the world’s best.

Now, a reported €50million verbal proposal for an established attacking star would demonstrate that Leeds are not restricting their ambition to one position.

The numbers involved are substantial.

But the salary issue remains the elephant in the room.

Even if Milan are willing to negotiate around the €50million figure, Leeds would still need Leao to agree terms that make the move financially viable.

Until that happens, talk of a move being completed would be premature.

For now, though, the important development is that Leeds have apparently made their intentions known.

The Whites are interested.

They have put a huge verbal proposal on the table.

Galatasaray’s pursuit has hit a stumbling block.

And one factor — Leao’s wage demands — could determine whether this develops into one of the most sensational transfers in Leeds’ recent history or disappears before serious negotiations even begin.

The door is open.

But Leeds still have to convince the man standing in the doorway to walk through it.
