The Australian midfielder failed to meet the club’s deadline to accept an improved contract offer, bringing an end to his five-year spell in Edinburgh.
His departure represents another significant exit for Hearts following Derek McInnes’ move to Rangers earlier this summer. Reports have also linked Devlin himself with a possible switch to Ibrox, where he could reunite with his former manager should a deal materialise.
Lawrence Shankland has already completed his move to Rangers, while Michael Steinwender, Frankie Kent, Beni Baningime and Alan Forrest have also departed the club during the current transfer window.
Speaking after Hearts’ behind-closed-doors meeting with Kilmarnock and their friendly fixture against Livingston at Almondvale, Vrancken admitted his focus now has to remain on players fully committed to the club’s future.

“As a coach, of course we want good players to stay. It’s disappointing because I had a good phone call with him and I sent some text messages with him. It’s always disappointing to see a player go who has personality and quality. I think he could bring us good things but you cannot keep waiting for him to decide. When he really wants to stay, he could decide earlier, or today.
“When he keeps postponing or delaying it…I think he was honest with me. He seemed like a really good personality, a good guy. There were already a few days in the World Cup and after we called and then he had time enough to make a decision. As a club you have to move on.
“I always focus on the players I have at the moment. I knew he was end of contract, so you work with the guys who are there.”
The comments underline Hearts’ stance throughout negotiations. While the club were keen to retain one of their most consistent midfield performers, they ultimately felt they could not continue waiting indefinitely for a final answer.
With Rangers reportedly monitoring the situation, Devlin’s next move is expected to attract plenty of attention, particularly if McInnes decides to strengthen his midfield with another familiar face from his time in Edinburgh.

Following confirmation of his departure, Devlin issued an emotional message to supporters after bringing the curtain down on a memorable spell at Tynecastle.

Hearts also gave me the opportunity to live out my dream of playing overseas and representing my country at two World Cups, something I’ll always be thankful for.
“To the fans, thank you. This club is nothing without all of you. The love and support you’ve shown me from day one have meant more than words can say. The atmosphere at Tynecastle is truly special, and being welcomed as one of your own is something I’ll never forget. This wasn’t an easy decision, and it certainly wasn’t one I took lightly. I hope you can understand. Thank you to everyone at the club for believing in me and allowing me to be part of something so special. Hearts will always hold a special place in my heart. I wish everyone connected with the club nothing but success in the future.”
Although Hearts supporters will undoubtedly be disappointed to lose another influential figure, attention is now turning towards where Devlin’s future lies. Rangers remain one of the clubs most heavily linked with the midfielder, and should McInnes push ahead with a move, the Australian could soon find himself back in the Premiership spotlight—this time wearing the colours of Hearts’ Glasgow rivals.
