Over recent seasons, a number of highly-rated youngsters have opted to continue their development south of the border, with English sides willing to move quickly when elite teenage talent becomes available.
Celtic have already seen several promising academy stars attract interest from England in recent months, highlighting the growing reputation of their youth system.
While the club remain committed to producing first-team players, competition from wealthier clubs has made it increasingly difficult to retain some of their most gifted youngsters.
That trend now looks set to continue once again.
Sky Sports reporter Anthony Joseph has revealed that Fulham have struck an agreement with Celtic to sign highly-rated teenager Erskine Rennie.
The Premier League side are understood to have reached a deal for the 16-year-old forward, with personal terms already agreed on a three-year contract.
According to the report, Celtic will receive a compensation package worth around £100,000 for the youngster’s departure.
Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano also confirmed the move earlier, revealing that Fulham had beaten several clubs to secure Rennie’s signature.
Romano reported:
“Fulham agree deal to sign 16-year-old talented winger Erskine Rennie from Celtic.”
“He will join on a long-term contract.”
Anthony Joseph has since added further details, stating:
“Fulham have agreed a deal to sign Celtic youngster Erskine Rennie.”
“It’s understood the striker, 16, has agreed terms on a three-year contract with the Premier League club.”
“Celtic will receive around £100,000 in compensation.”
Rennie, born on January 28, 2010, is regarded as one of the brightest talents emerging from Celtic’s academy setup. Despite being only 16 years old, he has already represented Scotland at Under-15 level and recently made his Celtic B debut in the Lowland League.
His performances have attracted attention from several clubs across Europe, but reports suggest Fulham ultimately convinced the teenager that Craven Cottage offered the ideal pathway for his long-term development.
The London club’s youth recruitment strategy has been praised in recent years, with Fulham increasingly targeting elite prospects before they reach senior football.
For Celtic, Rennie’s departure follows shortly after another academy setback, with defender Dara Jikiemi also completing a move to Liverpool.
The increasing number of young Scottish prospects heading to England has become a familiar pattern since Brexit, with Premier League clubs continuing to take advantage of compensation rules to secure some of the country’s most exciting youngsters.
Although Rennie has yet to feature for Celtic’s first team, those within the club have viewed him as a player with significant long-term potential. However, Fulham’s project and the opportunity to begin his professional career in England have now won the race for his signature.
