McCrorie departed the Light Blues back in 2021 after his loan spell at Aberdeen was converted into a permanent transfer through an obligation-to-buy clause.
At the time, it was Derek McInnes who brought him to Pittodrie, and now the pair appear set to reunite once again at Rangers.
The Scottish international has spent recent seasons with Bristol City, where he featured predominantly as a right wing-back. However, one of the biggest attractions of the deal is his ability to operate across several positions.
That flexibility is something McInnes knows very well from their previous time together and is expected to play a major role in the manager’s plans moving forward.
Although McCrorie is likely arriving to strengthen the right side of defence, his career history suggests he can offer much more.
Throughout his professional journey, he has accumulated extensive experience in a variety of roles. According to Transfermarkt, his two most frequently played positions have been defensive midfield and centre-back.
He has also operated as a right-back, right wing-back, central midfielder, and even on the opposite flank when required.
That versatility could provide Rangers with valuable tactical options during a demanding domestic and European schedule.
Interestingly, McInnes often preferred to use McCrorie in midfield during their time together at Aberdeen.
The Rangers boss deployed him 19 times as a defensive midfielder while also utilising him in central midfield, right midfield and central defence.
With several years having passed since then, it remains to be seen whether McInnes views McCrorie primarily as a defender or whether he could once again be used in a more central role.
Either way, Rangers appear poised to add a player who understands Scottish football, possesses leadership qualities, and already has a strong working relationship with the man now leading the club.
