Celtic close in on first summer signing
Celtic are now reported to have reached an agreement for their first new arrival of the summer transfer window.
It has been a relatively quiet start to the window for the Scottish champions, who have yet to unveil a fresh signing, even though Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain remained at the club after agreeing a one-year extension.
O’Neill is keen to add several new players this summer, fully aware that there are still important gaps within his squad, while significant outgoing business is also expected.
Among the biggest concerns has been the lack of recognised strikers currently available at Parkhead. Following Kelechi Iheanacho’s departure at the end of his contract, Callum Osmand has been the club’s only natural centre-forward option.
That issue now appears close to being addressed.
Celtic agree deal for Camilo Duran
According to Sky Sports journalist Anthony Joseph, Celtic have agreed a transfer for Qarabag striker Camilo Duran in a package that could eventually rise to £5million.
The Hoops are set to pay £3million up front, with a further £2million in performance-related add-ons included in the agreement. The sale represents a huge profit for Qarabag, who signed the Colombian for around £200,000, and it is also understood to be a club-record transfer fee for the Azerbaijani side.
Duran’s impressive European campaign played a major role in attracting Celtic’s attention. The striker scored five goals in the Champions League last season, making him one of Qarabag’s standout performers on the continental stage.
The report adds that Duran is expected to arrive in the UK this week to complete his medical with Celtic. He could then link up with O’Neill’s squad in Ireland, although he is almost certain to travel with his new teammates for the upcoming training camp in Portugal.
The remaining paperwork and the player’s contract are also expected to be finalised during his first visit to Celtic.
Why Duran could be a smart addition
At just 24 years old, Duran still has significant room for development, and Celtic will be hoping his pace, strength and direct style translate effectively to Scottish football.
The Colombian may not be the final striker arrival of the summer, with Celtic still expected to pursue at least one more centre-forward, but securing the first piece of the puzzle is an important step.
Given the substantial transfer income the club could generate through outgoing sales, the £3million initial payment is not viewed as a major obstacle for the Scottish champions.
After what many supporters considered a frustratingly slow start to the transfer window, the prospect of finally bringing a new striker through the door is likely to provide a significant boost around Parkhead.
