Rangers have already shown they mean business this summer, strengthening several key areas of Derek McInnes’ squad as preparations continue for the new campaign. After a disappointing previous season, those at Ibrox appear determined to provide the new manager with the tools needed to challenge on every front.
The club’s recruitment strategy has attracted plenty of praise in recent weeks, with a blend of proven experience, leadership and long-term potential arriving through the doors. Yet even with several additions already completed, Rangers have continued to scan the market for opportunities that could further improve the squad.
One such opportunity has now resulted in another significant piece of business.
Rangers have completed the signing of Dan Neil on a three-year contract, despite reported interest from Wolverhampton Wanderers, West Ham United and Southampton.
The midfielder leaves Sunderland following a loan spell at Ipswich Town. Across his time with both clubs, Neil played an important role in helping them secure promotion from the Championship. It had appeared increasingly likely that his next destination would either be another English second-tier club or Hull City following their return to the Premier League.
Transfer journalist Ben Jacobs reported last week that “West Ham, Rangers and Hull City are all exploring signing free agent Dan Neil.”
Soon afterwards, Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie added: “Southampton are in advanced talks with midfielder Dan Neil. The free agent midfielder is high on Tonda Eckert’s wish list, and is close to signing. There’s also interest in the 24-year-old from Wolves & West Ham, who has his pick of top Championship clubs.”
Despite that strong competition, Rangers have ultimately won the race, with the midfielder pictured in club colours during his unveiling.
Neil becomes the latest arrival under McInnes following the additions of Lawrence Shankland, Ross McCrorie, Ben Godfrey and Ivor Pandur during an active summer at Ibrox.
Speaking after completing the move, Neil said: “It is a new chapter for myself, and I am really excited to be signing for Rangers. I’m really looking forward to what the next few years can bring.
“I’ve spoken to many people who have been here, and they said it’s a very similar feeling, and as a character and a person that really drives me to give 110 per cent day in and day out, and I need that in my career.”
McInnes also welcomed his newest signing by saying: “I’m absolutely delighted to welcome Dan to the club. He will be an excellent addition to our squad. He is a technically gifted midfielder who is strong in possession, can contribute goals and brings tremendous energy to the team.
“At 24, we are signing a player who is hungry and ambitious, but who already possesses significant experience and leadership qualities, having captained Sunderland to promotion to the Premier League in 2025. I’m really looking forward to working with Dan throughout pre-season as we prepare for the challenges ahead.”
Neil’s arrival further highlights Rangers’ intent to recruit players entering the prime years of their careers while adding valuable leadership qualities to the dressing room.
With pre-season now gathering momentum and several important signings already secured, supporters will be hoping Neil can quickly settle into life at Ibrox and play a major role in McInnes’ plans as Rangers aim to compete strongly throughout the upcoming campaign.
