Leeds United’s summer planning continues to gather momentum as the club explores ways to strengthen a squad that successfully navigated its return to the Premier League.

After securing survival and finishing comfortably clear of danger, attention has now shifted towards building a side capable of taking another step forward. Daniel Farke and the recruitment team are understood to be targeting players who can contribute immediately while also offering long-term value.

The Whites have already been linked with reinforcements across several areas of the pitch, with midfield believed to be one department under close review. Leeds are determined to avoid standing still after last season’s progress, particularly with a number of ambitious clubs expected to strengthen significantly over the coming months.

There is also a growing focus on identifying younger talents with room for development, rather than relying solely on experienced additions. That strategy appears to be shaping several of the club’s transfer decisions heading into the new campaign.

One name who continues to attract attention is a midfielder who enjoyed an impressive season in the Championship and is now emerging as a serious option for Leeds United.

Leeds United considering Shea Charles move:

Leeds have reportedly revived their interest in Southampton midfielder Shea Charles.

The 22-year-old was among the Championship’s standout performers last term, playing a key role as the Saints recovered from a difficult start and eventually secured a top-six finish.

Charles featured in both of Southampton’s play-off semi-final victories over Middlesbrough before the club’s involvement in the widely-publicised ‘spygate’ controversy ultimately prevented them from taking part in the end-of-season final.

Fresh interest emerges

Leeds have been linked with Charles before, and reports now suggest their admiration has not faded.

According to Mail Online, the Whites are currently assessing a possible move for the Northern Ireland international following Southampton’s failure to earn promotion back to the Premier League.

The midfielder is believed to carry a valuation of around £20 million, although many observers believe his market value could rise significantly if his development continues on its current trajectory.

Family connection adds intrigue

Interestingly, Leeds have also previously been connected with Charles’ younger brother, Pierce.

The goalkeeper currently plays for Sheffield Wednesday and spent the 2024/25 season alongside Shea at Hillsborough before both players continued their careers elsewhere.

The brothers came through Manchester City’s academy system before forging their own paths in senior football and remain teammates on the international stage for Northern Ireland.

That family connection may not influence Leeds’ decision-making directly, but it adds another interesting layer to a transfer story that continues to develop.

Leeds have monitored him for some time

This is far from the first occasion Charles has appeared on Leeds United’s radar.

Last month, Football Insider correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that the club’s interest stretches back well before the current transfer window.

Speaking on the Transfer Insider Podcast, he explained:

“Leeds have held a long-term interest in Shea Charles.

“They considered a move for him last summer following his impressive spell on loan at Sheffield Wednesday, so I’m sure they will continue to keep tabs on the defensive midfielder.

“If Charles seeks a move away from St Mary’s this summer, I think there’ll be a wide open race for him and Leeds are just one of probably several clubs who would be interested in the Northern Ireland International.”

Competition likely if Southampton cash in

Given his age, versatility and growing reputation, Leeds are unlikely to enjoy a clear run at signing Charles should Southampton decide to sell.

The midfielder has established himself as one of the Championship’s most highly-rated young players and could attract interest from multiple clubs across England.

However, Leeds appear determined to remain active in the race.

With Farke looking to add energy, quality and long-term potential to his midfield options, Charles seems to fit the profile of player the club are increasingly prioritising as they prepare for the challenges of the 2026/27 season.
