Former Sporting youth development chief João Couto has encouraged Youssef Chermiti to consider a switch from Rangers to Porto if a substantial transfer proposal materialises.

The Portuguese forward endured a mixed first campaign at Ibrox last season, initially finding it difficult to justify the significant £8m fee Rangers paid to bring him in from Everton.

Over time, though, his performances began to improve, with standout moments including a hat-trick against Hearts in February and a clinical brace in the Old Firm clash against Celtic, ultimately finishing the season with 15 goals across all competitions.

That late surge in form also went some way towards validating Rangers’ reported decision to reject a £13m approach from Fenerbahce during the January window.

The 22-year-old’s progress has naturally attracted attention from across Europe, with Galatasaray, PSV Eindhoven and Porto all being credited with interest in recent reports. That growing external admiration has now brought fresh opinion from one of his early mentors.

Couto, who previously served as a coach and coordinator within Sporting’s academy system — where Chermiti originally developed before his 2023 move to Everton — shared his thoughts on the striker’s next potential step during an interview with Bola Branca.

“I would like him to return to Sporting, but Porto is a very good club for him.

“I remember when he was a beginner and people envisioned him as a future striker for the country.

“His departure [from Sporting to Everton] helped him. He had a different style of football, he had to adapt, he faced difficulties. This enriched him in terms of football.”

While speculation continues to build around his long-term future, Rangers are believed to be carefully assessing their position, particularly as they look to balance squad development with financial considerations ahead of the new campaign.

Correio da Manha now report that Rangers are waiting on “serious” offers for the frontman to emerge. The Light Blues are said to be demanding £25million to allow the striker to leave the club in this window, with Chermiti still having three years remaining on his current contract at Ibrox.
