Paraag Marathe wasn’t able to confirm whether Leeds are planning to make a ‘marquee signing’ this summer, but the chairman was crystal clear about the intention to sign players capable of making an instant impact.
Marathe said: “Both big and marquee are relative terms, so what’s marquee to you may not be marquee to me. But I will say I think (with) who we are pursuing already, we are not trying to bring in squad players that maybe come on in the 85th minute, we’re trying to bring in players who make an impact right away.
“We already have a pretty good squad and a squad I’m proud of, so by that, there will be impact players.”
Having conceded 56 goals in the Premier League last season, the second-highest total of any side to stay up, it is clear that defensive reinforcements are a priority, with Manchester City’s Nathan Ake also appearing on the club’s radar.
However, the Whites are also exploring opportunities to recruit from a side that reached the Champions League quarter-finals last season.
Leeds stepping up pursuit of “rapid” defender
According to a report from 225 Foot (via Sport Witness), Leeds have now been making advances to sign Sporting CP defender Ousmane Diomande, and they are eager to accelerate negotiations as quickly as possible.
However, the 49ers may have to break their existing transfer record to convince Sporting to sanction a sale, with the Portuguese outfit placing a valuation of €50m (£43m) on the highly-rated centre-back.
Despite the significant price tag, discussions could develop swiftly, particularly as the Ivorian is understood to be open to a Premier League switch should he opt to leave Lisbon this summer.
Zach Lowy is a strong admirer of the 22-year-old, with the journalist previously describing him as a big-game performer who possesses all the attributes required to reach elite level.
The defender missed a large portion of the 2025-26 season due to injury and AFCON commitments, but still impressed when available, averaging 6.2 defensive actions per 90 minutes in Liga Portugal – the second-highest figure in the squad.
Diomande has also gained valuable Champions League experience, featuring 18 times in Europe’s top competition, and could now represent a marquee-level addition for Leeds as they aim to establish themselves firmly in the Premier League next season.
