Could Lucas Perri be allowed to leave Leeds?
Leeds United are reportedly willing to listen to offers for Lucas Perri this summer as they push forward with plans to recruit a new first-choice goalkeeper.
The 28-year-old joined the Whites from Lyon last year, arriving with the expectation that he could finally solve the club’s long-standing issues between the posts.
However, despite arriving with a strong reputation, the Brazilian shot-stopper struggled to establish himself as an automatic starter and eventually lost his place in the side to Karl Darlow during the latter stages of the Premier League campaign.
Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Leeds are now prepared to part ways with Perri and would consider suitable offers for his services.
This development comes as the Yorkshire side accelerate their search for a new goalkeeper, with several names already under consideration ahead of what is expected to be a busy transfer window.
Football Insider revealed on 22 May that Perri could be moved on as Leeds continue discussions over Darlow’s future while simultaneously pursuing another goalkeeper addition.
The Brazilian is no longer viewed as the long-term solution in goal, and the club are now exploring potential exit opportunities that would allow them to recover the investment made last summer.
Interest from clubs in both Turkey and Brazil has been mentioned as a possible route out, with Leeds hopeful of recouping the £15 million they spent to bring him to Elland Road.
“Leeds want to sign a new goalkeeper,” Brown told Football Insider.
“Karl Darlow has done a very good job for them, they’re happy with his role, but they feel they need to bring somebody in who can really nail down the starting place.
“That calls into question the future of Lucas Perri, who lost his place in the starting XI, and it looks like he’s not going to be part of their plans.
“If an offer comes in for him that will allow them to make their money back, I expect Leeds will be ready to accept it, and then it can be spent on bringing in his replacement.”
Who could become the next Leeds United goalkeeper?
With preparations underway for a potential departure, Leeds have already identified a number of possible replacements as they continue evaluating options in the market.
The goalkeeping position has become one of the club’s priority areas, with recruitment staff keeping a close watch on targets from both domestic and overseas leagues.
Among the names frequently linked is Newcastle United goalkeeper Nick Pope, who remains highly regarded by decision-makers at Elland Road.
Brown previously told Football Insider that Newcastle are open to allowing Pope to leave as they pursue a new number one, with Burnley’s James Trafford reportedly high on their shortlist.
That situation could create an opportunity for Leeds to revisit their long-standing interest in the England international after deciding against a move last summer.
Pope’s experience, leadership and Premier League pedigree make him an attractive option for a side looking to strengthen a position that remains under review.
Should Leeds succeed in securing a new goalkeeper, it could pave the way for Perri’s departure and bring a swift conclusion to what has ultimately been a disappointing spell at Elland Road for the Brazilian.
