NafisaPolice Scotland have released a statement following the disorderly scenes at Celtic Park after Celtic clinched the Scottish Premiership title with a dramatic late victory over Hearts.
When Callum Osmand struck Celtic’s third goal deep into stoppage time, thousands inside Parkhead exploded into celebration. Supporters spilled onto the pitch as Martin O’Neill’s side confirmed themselves champions of Scotland after one of the most gripping title races in recent memory.
However, the post-match scenes are now under review following allegations that Hearts players and staff were subjected to assaults and abuse during the pitch invasion.
Hearts issued a statement after the match claiming some of their players and staff were targeted amid the chaos following the final whistle.
Police Scotland have now confirmed they are assessing the incident.
“We are engaging with Heart of Midlothian FC to establish if any of their players were assaulted on the pitch at the conclusion of the event.
“The circumstances of the incident are being reviewed.”
The match itself was an intense occasion. Hearts were minutes away from securing the title themselves after Lawrence Shankland’s opener put the visitors ahead in the first half.
Arne Engels levelled from the penalty spot before late goals from Daizen Maeda and Osmand completed the comeback and triggered wild celebrations across the stadium.
Security staff and police moved quickly to regain control of the pitch following the invasion as players and officials made their way down the tunnel.
