PFA Scotland have released a statement following the scenes at Celtic Park after the Hoops’ dramatic title victory over Hearts.

PFA Scotland chief executive Fraser Wishart has called on football authorities to rethink how incidents involving supporter behaviour and player welfare are managed, insisting that stronger protections are required to safeguard players in their workplace environment.

The players’ union has consistently raised concerns throughout the season regarding safety matters affecting its members, including crowd disorder and alleged abuse during matches across Scottish football.

Following the latest events over the weekend, the organisation renewed its demand for reform and insisted it should have a direct role in any future review of the regulations surrounding “unacceptable conduct”.

In a statement, PFA Scotland said: “PFA Scotland has been consistent in voicing its concerns for our members’ workplace safety. Despite our previous warnings; pitch invasions, verbal and physical threats and other workplace incidents in the SPFL and Scottish Cup have continued.

“PFA Scotland has already raised the issue of ‘clubs investigating clubs’ and now there is an urgent need to review the regulatory framework regarding unacceptable conduct regulations and investigations, in order to secure transparent and independent outcomes which support player safety and the good of the game.

“The circumstances at the weekend cause us to directly restate our view that PFA Scotland should be part of a review into the regulatory framework applied to ‘unacceptable conduct’ to ensure that the interests of the players are paramount and that their safety must be the number one issue when independently regulating these challenging issues.”
