The coaching market in France has been particularly active in recent months, with several clubs reassessing their long-term direction after inconsistent campaigns.
Lorient, in particular, are believed to be evaluating multiple profiles as they prepare for possible changes in the technical area ahead of the new season.
After a short and difficult stint in Scotland, Nancy has remained out of work since leaving Celtic in January, and questions have naturally followed about where his next opportunity would come from.
Now, that next step could reportedly come back in his homeland.
According to L’Equipe, the Ligue 1 outfit are considering Nancy as they weigh up potential successors to Olivier Pantaloni. The 49-year-old has been without a club since his departure from Celtic earlier this year, following a brief and challenging period in Glasgow.
Nancy originally arrived at Celtic carrying strong momentum after his achievements in Major League Soccer. He previously impressed with CF Montréal before guiding Columbus Crew to MLS Cup glory in 2023, a success that significantly boosted his reputation across the wider football landscape.
That pedigree is now understood to have placed him on Lorient’s radar. The French club, owned by Black Knight Football Club — a group with connections to Bournemouth — are believed to view Nancy’s North American experience as a valuable asset in their recruitment process.
The report also states that discussions have already taken place between Nancy and Lorient sporting director Laurent Koscielny, as the club continues to narrow down its shortlist of managerial options.
Lorient had also explored other candidates, including Will Still and Stéphane Gilli, though both now appear likely to pursue different opportunities, with Still linked to Auxerre and Gilli moving towards Angers.
Another name under consideration is Le Mans manager Patrick Videira, who has earned attention after steering the club through consecutive promotions from the National division up to Ligue 1.
However, a deal for Videira may prove more complex, with the coach still tied to a contract at Le Mans and also attracting interest from Lens.
For Nancy, the emerging interest from Lorient could represent a relatively quick return to management after his spell at Celtic ended in disappointment.
While his time in Scotland failed to deliver the expected results, his previous success in MLS continues to keep him on the radar of clubs across Europe.
