NafisaSunderland midfielder Pierre Ekwah has credited his time at Chelsea for shaping his career, explaining that the intense environment at the London club played a key role in his development. Speaking to Le Progrès, the 22-year-old shared insights into his journey through some of England’s biggest academies.
Ekwah first arrived in England in 2018 when Chelsea signed him from FC Nantes for their academy. During his time in west London, he played for the Blues’ U18 and U21 sides but never broke into the first team. After three years, he moved to West Ham United in search of senior football, but opportunities at the top level also eluded him there.
In January 2023, the Frenchman joined Sunderland, where he quickly became a key player, making 61 appearances for the Black Cats by the end of last season. However, Régis Le Bris’ decision to exclude him from Sunderland’s plans at the start of this campaign led to a loan move to Saint-Étienne on deadline day. Ekwah has since impressed in Ligue 1, making 10 league starts.
Reflecting on his early days, Ekwah said: “My departure from Nantes was a bit complicated. At Chelsea, I found a different requirement and more work. They don’t give you anything. You have to fight every second on the pitch and dedicate your life to football.”
He added: “Obviously, I gained maturity. I left home at 13, then abroad at 16. I had never set foot there, I didn’t speak the language. I was all alone. I had to make sure it went as well as possible. And I got through it.”
Now thriving in France, Ekwah’s journey demonstrates resilience and the value of embracing challenges in pursuit of success.
