NafisaSebastiaan Bornauw’s time at Leeds United appears to be coming to an end, with the Belgium international set to travel to Germany to complete his move to Hamburg.
The centre-back has faced an uncertain future at Elland Road throughout the summer, despite featuring regularly during Leeds’ pre-season preparations. Daniel Farke has now given a clear indication that the defender is no longer central to his plans for the new Premier League campaign.
Bornauw joined Leeds from VfL Wolfsburg last summer but struggled to establish himself as a regular under Farke during the previous season. He made only nine Premier League appearances, and competition from Joe Rodon and Jaka Bijol meant opportunities were difficult to come by.
His situation appeared to change during pre-season, particularly after Farke adopted a 5-3-2 formation. Bornauw was given more responsibility and featured prominently, but that did not necessarily mean his long-term future had changed.
Now, it appears a solution has been found.
Sebastiaan Bornauw set for Hamburg medical
According to Hamburger Abendblatt, Bornauw is expected to fly to Hamburg on Sunday to undergo his medical ahead of a move to the Bundesliga club.
The Belgian will join Hamburg on loan, with the agreement understood to include an option for the German side to make the transfer permanent next summer.
Provided Bornauw passes his medical without any issues, the deal should then be formally completed.
The move would bring an end to a relatively brief spell at Leeds for the defender, who arrived with the expectation of providing valuable competition and depth at the heart of Farke’s defence.
Instead, regular football proved difficult to secure.
Farke had previously made it clear that he would have preferred to keep Bornauw as part of his squad, but the player’s desire for more consistent playing time has ultimately played a major role in the situation.
Nico Elvedi already lined up as replacement
Bornauw’s departure has also been made easier by Leeds’ decision to bring in Nico Elvedi from Borussia Monchengladbach.
The Switzerland international has agreed to join the Whites and is expected to become the direct replacement for Bornauw at Elland Road.
Elvedi offers Farke something particularly valuable: experience.
The 29-year-old has spent a decade playing in the Bundesliga and has accumulated hundreds of appearances for Monchengladbach, while also representing Switzerland at international level.
More importantly for Leeds, Farke already knows him from their time together at Monchengladbach during the 2022/23 campaign.
Farke previously described Elvedi as “one of the best central defenders in Europe” when the defender was performing at his highest level, highlighting just how highly the Leeds boss rates the player.
With Elvedi coming in, Leeds should not be left short in central defence despite Bornauw’s departure.
Joe Rodon, Jaka Bijol and Tarik Muharemovic remain important options, while Elvedi will add another experienced figure to the group.
Leeds still need defensive depth
While Elvedi’s arrival should soften the blow of Bornauw leaving, Leeds cannot afford to become complacent with their defensive depth.
Jayden Bogle and James Justin provide options at right-back, with Justin also capable of filling in centrally or on the left when required.
The biggest concern could come at left-back, particularly with Gabriel Gudmundsson currently facing a spell on the sidelines.
Leeds have already enjoyed an ambitious summer transfer window, bringing in the likes of James Trafford, Tarik Muharemovic and Harry Wilson, while Elvedi is now set to add another experienced player to Farke’s squad.
Bornauw’s exit therefore looks less like a major setback and more like another piece of squad reshaping.
The Belgian will now get the opportunity to return to Germany and potentially secure the regular football he could not find at Elland Road.
For Leeds, meanwhile, Elvedi should provide the experience and reliability Farke wants as his side prepares for another demanding Premier League campaign.
