The mock post, which many supporters jokingly claimed was worthy of being an official Celtic account, read:
“We’re worrying about the Champions League… you’re worrying about surviving the Europa League qualifiers.”
Although it was never an official Celtic post, the line spread rapidly across social media and became one of the most widely shared jokes of the evening, with fans from both sides reacting to its brutal simplicity.
Some Rangers supporters dismissed it as predictable rivalry banter, while others admitted it perfectly summed up how disappointing the night had been.
Replies beneath the viral post ranged from laughing emojis to heated arguments between both sets of supporters, with the Old Firm rivalry once again dominating football discussions online.
The timing only added to the sting.
While Celtic are preparing for another season competing on Europe’s biggest stage, Rangers now face the very real possibility of seeing their Europa League hopes ended before the competition has even properly begun unless they can produce a dramatic turnaround at Ibrox.
McInnes, however, refused to panic after the defeat.
The Rangers manager insisted his team had “beaten themselves” rather than being outplayed, pointing towards the costly defensive mistakes that completely changed the momentum of the match after such an encouraging opening.
Behind the scenes, Rangers also continue to push for further additions before the transfer window closes.
The Ibrox club have already strengthened with Daisuke Yokota and remain in the market for more attacking reinforcements as McInnes attempts to reshape his squad before the deadline.
