The transfer market is moving quickly across Europe, with clubs racing to secure promising young talent before the new season begins. Akpe Victory, the highly-rated 19-year-old centre-back from Hungarian side Zalaegerszeg, has reportedly agreed personal terms with Swiss outfit FC Basel, with the transfer now edging towards completion.

The towering Nigerian defender, who stands at 6ft 5in, has attracted widespread interest after an impressive rise over the last 18 months. Rangers were among the clubs credited with monitoring his progress, while Strasbourg and Benfica were also linked with the youngster.

Victory first caught attention during his spell with Lithuanian side Banga before earning a move to Zalaegerszeg earlier this year. Since arriving in Hungary, his reputation has continued to grow thanks to his commanding physical presence, aerial dominance and composure when playing out from the back.

Those performances reportedly prompted Zalaegerszeg to value the defender at around €5 million ahead of the summer transfer window.

According to transfer reporter Rudy Galetti, FC Basel have now made the decisive breakthrough in negotiations after several weeks of discussions with the Hungarian club.

The report states that Victory has already given the green light to the move after agreeing personal terms, leaving only the remaining formalities between the clubs before the deal is finalised.

If everything proceeds as expected, the transfer is anticipated to be completed next week.

For Rangers, it represents a setback in their search for another centre-back after identifying Victory as one of the defensive prospects capable of strengthening Derek McInnes’ squad.

However, the Light Blues are expected to continue exploring alternative options before the transfer window closes, with defensive recruitment remaining a priority despite already securing the arrival of Ben Godfrey earlier this summer.

While Victory now appears destined for Switzerland, Rangers’ search for another commanding defender is far from over as preparations continue for the new campaign.
