Even when the focus is on bringing fresh faces through the door, there is always the possibility that interest from abroad could force difficult decisions regarding players already on the books.
Rangers have already been among the busiest clubs in Scotland this summer, with Derek McInnes overseeing several arrivals as he prepares his squad for the challenges of the new campaign. However, recruitment is only one side of the equation, as keeping hold of key players remains equally important.
The Ibrox hierarchy are eager to avoid weakening the squad after investing heavily in reshaping the team, but the growing attention surrounding several Rangers stars means the club may soon face important decisions if sizeable offers begin arriving.
One player whose future has once again become the subject of speculation is midfielder Thelo Aasgaard.
Rangers could reportedly be persuaded to part ways with Thelo Aasgaard should a substantial bid arrive during the coming weeks, according to sources speaking to Football Insider.
The 24-year-old has generated serious attention from clubs across Europe this summer, with Serie A side Atalanta among those credited with monitoring his situation.
Although Rangers would prefer not to lose another important member of McInnes’ squad, the club could be forced to consider their position if the financial package is significant enough.
According to information revealed on Football Insider’s Transfer Insider podcast, Rangers are not actively looking to move Aasgaard on, but they have also stopped short of declaring him unavailable.
At this stage, there is no financial pressure forcing the Light Blues into a sale.
However, should a lucrative proposal arrive for a player whose first season at Ibrox proved inconsistent, the club may be willing to evaluate the opportunity.
If no suitable offer materialises, Rangers remain perfectly content to keep Aasgaard as part of McInnes’ midfield plans heading into the new season.
Rangers’ position remains flexible
Football Insider previously reported back in May that Rangers had no immediate intention of selling Aasgaard, despite suggestions that the club could look to recover the fee invested when signing him from Luton Town.
The Norwegian midfielder arrived at Ibrox last summer in a transfer worth approximately £3.5 million.
While an exit is still regarded as unlikely, Rangers could reconsider their stance if any interested club tables an offer comfortably above that figure.
Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, the journalist explained:
“He had a bit of an inconsistent first season up at Rangers, there’s no getting away from that.
“He scored eight goals in 48 appearances across all competitions, and obviously there was a lot of change at Rangers last year with Russell Martin and Danny Rohl.
“Rangers won’t be rushing him out of the exit door, but every player has his price, and if a big offer was to arrive for Aasgaard, I’m sure it’s something they would have to listen to.
“But he’s under contract until 2029, and Rangers aren’t under any pressure to sell Thelo Aasgaard as things stand.”
The midfielder’s own view
While transfer speculation continues to gather pace, Aasgaard himself reportedly has little interest in bringing his Rangers career to an early conclusion.
Despite enduring a difficult first campaign in Glasgow and facing criticism over inconsistent performances, the midfielder is believed to be determined to fight for his place.
Football Insider reported earlier this month that Aasgaard wants to remain at Rangers and silence those who have questioned whether he can become a long-term success at Ibrox.
Rather than pursuing an exit, he is understood to be focused on impressing McInnes throughout pre-season and establishing himself as a regular starter in the new manager’s midfield.
With a full year of Scottish Premiership experience now behind him, Aasgaard believes he is far better prepared for the demands of life at Rangers.
Whether Rangers eventually receive the type of financial offer capable of changing their position remains to be seen, but for now both club and player appear fully committed to continuing their journey together into the 2026/27 campaign.
