Leeds United’s encouraging start to the new Premier League season has suddenly been hit by a major setback, with Daniel Farke now facing a difficult selection headache at the back.
The Whites had worked hard throughout the summer to build a squad capable of handling the demands of Premier League football, with defensive depth one of the areas that received considerable attention during the transfer window.
Farke was able to welcome several new faces into his squad, including Nico Elvedi and Tarik Muharemovic, while Melvin Bard also arrived late in the window to provide additional versatility.
But even with those additions, losing an established first-team defender for a significant period was always going to test the strength of the squad.
That concern has now become reality.
The injury occurred during Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Brentford at Elland Road, when Joe Rodon was forced off during the first half after suffering a hamstring problem.
The Welsh international was visibly uncomfortable as he made his way from the pitch, immediately raising fears that Leeds could be without one of their most important defenders for a considerable period.
Those fears have now been confirmed.
Farke has revealed that Rodon has suffered a serious hamstring injury and is expected to be sidelined for a minimum of eight to 10 weeks.
Speaking ahead of Saturday’s trip to Brighton & Hove Albion, the Leeds manager delivered the grim update.
‘Bad news with him,’ Farke said.

‘(He has a) serious hamstring injury and will be out for eight to 10 weeks, so he will definitely not play before the next international break. Also, probably not the first games after the international break. Of course, it’s a big blow for us because he’s a key player, but it’s football and sometimes you have to deal with injuries.’
The timing could hardly be worse for Leeds, particularly with a demanding run of fixtures approaching.
Rodon has established himself as a key component of Farke’s defensive structure since arriving at Elland Road in 2023, making 139 appearances across all competitions and scoring three goals.
The 28-year-old had also reaffirmed his commitment to the club by signing a new four-year contract in August, underlining his importance to Leeds’ plans.
His absence now leaves Farke with a difficult balancing act as the season begins to gather pace.
Leeds started their Premier League campaign with a 1-0 victory away at Nottingham Forest before drawing 1-1 with Brentford at Elland Road. They also progressed in the Carabao Cup after defeating Forest for a second time.
The performances had provided plenty of encouragement, but Rodon’s injury changes the picture considerably.
Farke will now have to rely more heavily on the alternatives available to him, with the manager already acknowledging before the injury that senior centre-back depth was an area that required careful management.
Nico Elvedi’s arrival could now prove particularly valuable.
The Switzerland international came on for Rodon against Brentford and impressed after being thrown into the action unexpectedly, giving Farke an experienced option alongside his other defensive choices.
The setback also comes immediately after Leeds completed their final pieces of summer recruitment.
Melvin Bard arrived on loan from Nice to provide cover at left-back and wing-back while also offering the ability to operate at left centre-back. Jean-Matteo Bahoya was brought in from Eintracht Frankfurt to increase Farke’s attacking options following Gnonto’s departure.
Reflecting on the overall recruitment work, Farke admitted that the club had not managed to fulfil every single ambition but remained satisfied with the squad that had been assembled.
‘Not all the wishes are always completely fulfilled, but I would say 90, 95 per cent of what we wanted to do is really good. We also need a bit of luck in the offence, perhaps there are no injuries to some key players,’ Farke said when assessing the club’s summer activity.
Unfortunately for the Leeds boss, that luck has already deserted him in one crucial area.
Rodon’s absence is now set to stretch into the autumn, with Farke facing the prospect of being without his first-choice defender for a substantial portion of the opening months of the campaign.
The fixture list offers little respite either.
Leeds travel to Brighton on Saturday before heading to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea in the Carabao Cup third round on September 9. Newcastle United then visit Elland Road on September 14.
Those matches will provide an early examination of Leeds’ defensive depth.
For Farke, the immediate priority will be ensuring that Rodon’s absence does not derail the momentum Leeds had built during the opening weeks.
The manager has already accepted that injuries are part of football.
But with Rodon now facing at least eight to 10 weeks on the sidelines, Leeds have been handed their first major squad test of the new Premier League campaign.
