NafisaRangers have confirmed another departure from Ibrox, with midfielder Thelo Aasgaard completing a season-long loan move to Anderlecht.
The 24-year-old Norwegian will spend the remainder of the campaign with the Belgian club, who have an option to make the transfer permanent at the end of the season. Rangers will also receive a loan fee as part of the agreement.
Aasgaard’s exit comes after his opportunities became increasingly limited at Ibrox, despite making an encouraging start to the campaign.
The midfielder scored on the opening day against Dundee United and initially appeared to have established himself as an important attacking option for Derek McInnes.
However, competition for places has intensified, particularly following the arrival of Minsu Kim.
Kim operates in the same attacking midfield area as Aasgaard, and his emergence has made it more difficult for the Norwegian to secure regular minutes.
The timing of the move also reflects just how unpredictable the final days of a transfer window can be.
McInnes had already revealed that Aasgaard was travelling with the Rangers squad earlier on Wednesday before the situation changed rapidly.
Speaking to RangersTV, the Rangers boss explained:
“Thelo travelled with us earlier in the day to the hotel, but obviously things kind of moved on pretty quickly and materialised there.
“So, as far as I’m led to believe, there’s a deal being agreed.
“And Thelo is speaking to the club now, maybe going through a medical, but I don’t think it’s finalised yet.
“But it looks likely that Thelo’s season is going to be with someone else, and we wish him well if that is the case.
“But, you know, it’s sometimes just the way it is on the transfer window the last couple of days.
“There’s a wee bit of to-ing and fro-ing, and it’s not ideal from a manager’s point of view.”
The move eventually materialised, with Aasgaard now set to continue his season in Belgium.
For Rangers, the loan gives the midfielder an opportunity to play more regularly rather than remain on the fringes of McInnes’ squad.
It also provides Aasgaard with the chance to impress Anderlecht and potentially turn the temporary arrangement into a permanent transfer next summer.
His departure is another indication of the changes taking place around the Rangers squad, with McInnes continuing to shape his group and make difficult decisions over players who may struggle to secure consistent game time.
The focus at Ibrox will now turn towards the other business still expected before the transfer window closes.
Rangers are continuing to work on a deal for striker Kevin Kelsy, with the club expected to complete the move before the window shuts.
Kelsy’s arrival would give McInnes another option in attack and comes at an important point in the season, particularly with Rangers looking to build momentum after a difficult opening to the campaign.
For Aasgaard, meanwhile, the immediate priority will be proving that the strong start he made in Glasgow was no fluke.
The midfielder now has an entire season at Anderlecht to establish himself, regain regular playing time and potentially convince the Belgian club that he is worth keeping permanently.
Rangers will hope that the move works out for all parties.
