NafisaSebastiaan Bornauw’s time at Leeds United is now seemingly coming to an end, with the Belgian defender closing in on a move back to the Bundesliga.
According to the latest information from Sky Sport, Leeds and Hamburger SV have reached an agreement for Bornauw to join the German club on loan, with an option to make the move permanent.
The purchase option is reportedly worth between €4 million and €5 million, giving Hamburg the opportunity to sign the centre-back permanently if he impresses during his spell.
The next major step is already scheduled, with Bornauw expected to undergo his medical on Monday before the transfer can be completed.
For Leeds, the agreement brings an end to weeks of uncertainty surrounding the 27-year-old, whose future at Elland Road had become increasingly unclear.
Bornauw’s Leeds career comes to an early end
Bornauw only joined Leeds last summer after completing a move from VfL Wolfsburg for a reported fee of around £5 million.
The Belgium international arrived with considerable Bundesliga experience, having previously played for both Wolfsburg and FC Köln.
However, he struggled to establish himself as a regular under Daniel Farke.
Bornauw made only 12 Premier League appearances, including five starts, during his first season in England, and his limited role ultimately left the defender looking for a new opportunity.
Interestingly, his situation changed during pre-season.
Bornauw featured regularly as Farke experimented with his defensive setup, giving the Belgian an opportunity to demonstrate his qualities before the new campaign.
But behind the scenes, the player’s desire for a different challenge continued to grow.
A return to Germany now appears to offer exactly that.
Hamburg see Bornauw as a defensive leader
The move is particularly significant for Hamburg because Bornauw is not being brought in simply to provide squad depth.
HSV reportedly see the Belgian as someone who can take on a central role in their defence and develop into an important leader at the back.
That could give Bornauw the opportunity he struggled to find at Leeds.
Rather than competing for limited minutes behind Farke’s preferred defensive options, he should arrive at Hamburg with considerably greater responsibility.
The Bundesliga is also familiar territory for him.
Bornauw spent several years playing in Germany before moving to England, meaning he should not require a lengthy adaptation period to the league or its style of football.
Nico Elvedi clears the way for Bornauw’s departure
There is also an obvious connection between Bornauw’s departure and Leeds’ own defensive recruitment.
The Whites have already agreed a deal to sign Borussia Mönchengladbach defender Nico Elvedi, with the Switzerland international arriving as a direct replacement for Bornauw.
Leeds are reportedly paying around €10m plus a 15 per cent sell-on clause for Elvedi, while personal terms had already been agreed on a contract running until 2029.
That move had been dependent on Bornauw leaving, so the agreement with Hamburg represents another important piece of the puzzle for Farke.
With Elvedi coming in and Bornauw heading out, Leeds can now reshape the centre-back department without leaving themselves short.
What the deal means for Leeds
From Leeds’ perspective, a loan with an option to buy is not necessarily the most lucrative immediate outcome.
However, it gives Bornauw the chance to rebuild his career while allowing the club to potentially secure a permanent transfer next summer.
The reported €4m-€5m option would also allow Leeds to recoup a significant portion of their original investment if Hamburg decide to keep him.
More importantly, the move frees up space in Farke’s squad for the manager to continue building the team around the players he sees as central to his plans.
For Bornauw, meanwhile, it represents a chance to return to a league where he previously established himself as a reliable defender.
His Leeds chapter appears to be closing after only one season.
The medical on Monday is now the final major hurdle before the Belgian can officially begin his new chapter with Hamburg.
