NafisaLeeds United have officially completed one of the biggest statements of their summer transfer window, with James Trafford arriving at Elland Road from Manchester City in a club-record deal.
The England international has now completed his move to West Yorkshire after weeks of negotiations, giving Daniel Farke the high-quality goalkeeper he wanted ahead of the new Premier League campaign.
It is a major signing for Leeds, but the Trafford deal could prove to be just the beginning of another busy spell in the transfer market.
With the club having already secured Harry Wilson and Tarik Muharemovic alongside Trafford, attention is now turning towards the attacking areas of Farke’s squad.
And one name that continues to attract attention is Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliott.
The 23-year-old is expected to leave Anfield this summer after a difficult spell at Aston Villa last season, and Leeds have been identified as one potential destination for the England youth international.
Liverpool’s decision over Elliott’s future has opened the door for Leeds to explore a possible move, although there is still significant competition for his signature.
Liverpool decision could open door for Leeds United
Elliott returned to Liverpool earlier this summer following his loan spell at Aston Villa, but his future on Merseyside remains uncertain.
The midfielder endured a frustrating campaign at Villa Park, with a clause in the loan agreement limiting his playing time as the club looked to avoid triggering a permanent transfer.
He is now back with Liverpool, but it remains unclear whether he will have a long-term role in Arne Slot’s plans.
That uncertainty has naturally attracted interest from elsewhere.
RB Leipzig are reportedly regarded as the favourites for Elliott at this stage, but Leeds could become an increasingly attractive option if the midfielder decides he wants to remain in England.
Former Everton CEO Keith Wyness believes the Whites are capable of becoming a serious proposition for a player of Elliott’s quality as the club continues to establish itself back in the Premier League.
Speaking on Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness said:
“Yeah, I think the bad blood is certainly enough to get him away from Liverpool, and I think, I’m afraid, [RB] Leipzig are the favourites from what I’ve heard.
“I think that’s where it will end up. There’s a possibility he’ll go to Leeds, but Leipzig are still the favourites, and I think if they can come to personal terms, that’s what would make it happen.
“Leeds is going to become an attractive option for a player like Harvey, but I think it might be good for him personally to get out of England.
“We’ve seen before that many players can do very well in Germany now, and the English players, more and more going out there, starting to realise that they’re really increasing their value.
“I think the Bundesliga would suit him in his style of play very well. I still rate him as a player, I’m amazed Liverpool did what they did, and I think they’re going to see him go on to be a very good asset for someone else.”
Leeds United could now be an attractive destination
There is an argument that Leeds could offer Elliott something he desperately needs: regular football.
The midfielder’s development has stalled somewhat after failing to establish himself as a consistent starter at Liverpool and then struggling for minutes during his loan spell at Villa.
At Leeds, the situation could be completely different.
Farke is looking to build a squad capable of competing comfortably in the Premier League, and Elliott’s technical ability, versatility and experience at the highest level would give the manager another option in the attacking areas.
The fact that Leeds have already demonstrated their willingness to spend significantly this summer could also make a move possible if the two clubs can agree on a valuation.
However, Leipzig remain a major threat.
A move to Germany could offer Elliott the chance to rebuild his reputation away from the Premier League while playing in a league that has increasingly become an attractive destination for young English players.
That is why Leeds cannot afford to assume that Liverpool’s decision to allow Elliott to leave automatically means the midfielder will end up at Elland Road.
James Trafford signing changes the picture
What is undeniable is that Leeds have already shown they are serious about strengthening their squad.
The arrival of Trafford is perhaps the clearest evidence yet.
The goalkeeper became Leeds’ club-record signing, and the Whites beat competition from other established Premier League clubs to secure his signature.
His arrival has transformed the goalkeeping department and given Farke a player widely regarded as one of the brightest young goalkeepers in English football.
Now the focus can shift towards other areas.
Leeds still need additional attacking quality, and Elliott would certainly fit the profile of a player capable of adding creativity and versatility to Farke’s squad.
For now, however, the midfielder remains a Liverpool player and Leipzig appear to hold the advantage in the race.
But Liverpool’s decision to leave the door open for Elliott to find a new club has ensured Leeds can at least enter the conversation.
And after completing the blockbuster Trafford deal, nobody at Elland Road will be surprised if the Whites continue looking for another major statement before the transfer window closes.
