Derek McInnes sends unexpected shocking message to Martin O’Neill after Celtic release statement of SAD NEWS to the Hoops gaffer

Rangers manager Derek McInnes has put football rivalries to one side after learning that Celtic boss Martin O’Neill has been admitted to hospital.

Celtic confirmed earlier on Wednesday that the 74-year-old is recovering after undergoing a small medical procedure, with the club expecting him to be discharged within the next 24 to 48 hours.

The news prompted an immediate response from across Scottish football, including from Ibrox, where McInnes was preparing his side for Thursday night’s Europa League qualifier against Jagiellonia Bialystok.

Speaking during his pre-match press conference, the Rangers boss admitted he had only recently been informed of the situation while travelling back from the airport and stressed that he knew no more than what had already been made public.

Despite the fierce Old Firm rivalry, McInnes was quick to offer his support to O’Neill and his family.

“En route from the airport, I was informed that Martin had obviously had a small procedure. I don’t know much more than that.

“Obviously it goes without saying that it’s not the best of news and hopefully Martin is okay, him and his family.

“I’m sure he will be back to work, if he can, as soon as possible.”

McInnes’ comments underline the respect that exists between the two managers away from the intense rivalry that surrounds Rangers and Celtic.

The pair are expected to battle throughout the season as both clubs chase Scottish Premiership glory, but the Rangers manager made it clear that football takes a back seat when it comes to health.

Celtic’s statement earlier confirmed that O’Neill is recovering well after the procedure and that everyone at the club is looking forward to welcoming him back once he has fully recovered.

For now, the focus remains on O’Neill’s health, with supporters from both sides of Glasgow sending messages of support and wishing the veteran manager a speedy return to the touchline.
