That search has now led them toward one of the breakout stars of this summer’s FIFA World Cup.
Leeds United have reportedly stepped up their efforts to sign Japan international Zion Suzuki, with several well-connected journalists claiming the Yorkshire club have taken a significant lead in the race for his signature.
Suzuki enhanced his growing reputation with an impressive World Cup campaign, producing a series of outstanding saves as Japan progressed from Group F ahead of Sweden and Tunisia.
The 23-year-old also caught the eye during his country’s dramatic knockout clash against Brazil, where Japan came agonisingly close to causing a major upset before Gabriel Martinelli struck a late winner.
His displays have only strengthened the reputation he has already built in Italy since joining Parma from Belgian outfit Sint-Truiden in the summer of 2024.
Interest in the goalkeeper has intensified over recent weeks, but Leeds appear to be moving fastest to complete a deal.
Italian reporter Gianluigi Longari revealed that the Whites are attempting to finalise the transfer and are prepared to increase their financial package to satisfy Parma’s demands.
He wrote:

Should the transfer reach the reported valuation of around €30 million (£26m), Suzuki would become the most expensive goalkeeper in Leeds United’s history.
Further encouragement for Leeds supporters has come from respected Italian journalist Alfredo Pedullà, who believes the transfer is continuing to move in the right direction.
He explained:

Transfer insider KrrishFT has also reported positive developments, claiming Leeds have already reached an agreement with Suzuki’s representatives over a five-year contract.
Although Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur remain interested in the Japanese international, Leeds are said to be the club pushing hardest to conclude negotiations, with an official proposal reportedly ready to be submitted.
The same reports suggest Suzuki has been convinced by the opportunity to become Leeds United’s first-choice goalkeeper immediately upon his arrival in England.
The goalkeeping department has already undergone significant changes this summer following Illan Meslier’s departure, while Karl Darlow has continued to attract reported interest from Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and Everton.
Elsewhere, Leeds remain active in the transfer market as they continue searching for defensive reinforcements following Pascal Struijk’s exit to Brighton & Hove Albion, with additional targets also being monitored across several positions before the transfer window closes.
