Rangers have officially confirmed the signing of experienced English defender Ben Godfrey from Atalanta on a season-long loan, with an option to make the move permanent after the campaign.
The announcement was made just moments ago by the club, with the former England international becoming another major addition to Derek McInnes’ rebuilding project at Ibrox.
Godfrey arrives with an impressive résumé, having previously starred in the Premier League with Norwich City before earning a high-profile move to Everton in a transfer reportedly worth around £25 million.
During his spell on Merseyside, the defender made more than 100 Premier League appearances and earned two senior England caps, establishing himself as one of England’s highly regarded defenders before injuries disrupted his progress.
Following his move to Italian side Atalanta in 2024, opportunities became limited, leading to loan spells with Ipswich Town, Sheffield United and Danish outfit Brondby, where he rediscovered consistent first-team football during the second half of last season.
Rangers moved swiftly to secure the defender’s services after identifying him as a priority target, with McInnes keen to add athleticism, versatility and top-level experience to his defensive department.
The signing also arrives at an important moment for the Light Blues.

However, while there is understandable excitement surrounding the move, comparisons with defenders at rival clubs such as Celtic’s Auston Trusty and Cameron Carter-Vickers remain subjective. Whether Godfrey proves superior will ultimately be decided by his performances on the pitch over the coming season.
What cannot be disputed is that Rangers have secured a player with elite-level experience, international pedigree and the motivation to reignite his career.
