Leeds United have reportedly agreed to sell Pascal Struijk to Brighton & Hove Albion this weekend, with the 49ers now preparing for a major rebuild in defence.
Given that Struijk was approaching the final year of his contract at Elland Road, there had long been an expectation that interest from other clubs would arrive—and that Leeds would be prepared to consider the right proposal.
According to The Athletic’s Beren Cross, Leeds and Brighton have now reached a verbal agreement on a £20 million transfer that will see the Dutch defender head to the AMEX Stadium.
The deal is expected to progress through the remaining formalities shortly, making Struijk the club’s first major outgoing transfer of the summer window.
Although Leeds made genuine efforts to secure the defender on an improved long-term contract, those attempts have ultimately fallen short.
As a result, attention now turns towards identifying a suitable replacement, with the recruitment team expected to prioritise another naturally left-footed central defender before the new season begins.
Replacing Struijk will not be a straightforward task.
While opinions among sections of the fanbase have sometimes been mixed, his performances consistently attracted interest from clubs competing at a higher level, highlighting just how highly he is regarded outside West Yorkshire.
There remains a feeling that Leeds have lost one of their strongest defensive performers at a stage when he was arguably entering the peak years of his career.
That makes the challenge facing the recruitment department even more significant.
The Whites are now under pressure to get their next defensive signing absolutely right.
Struijk may not leave behind the status of an untouchable club legend, but he certainly departs having established himself as an important figure in Daniel Farke’s system and one of the team’s most reliable defenders during their successful campaign.
Fortunately for Leeds, the transfer fee generated from his departure provides valuable flexibility in the market.
With additional funds available and several defensive targets already believed to be under consideration, the club now has an opportunity to reshape the back line with another player capable of maintaining the standards established over the past season.
Whether that replacement can immediately fill the sizeable void left by Struijk, however, remains one of the biggest questions Leeds United will have to answer before the Premier League kicks off once again.
