Negotiations over his transfer are believed to be progressing, and Southampton have already intensified efforts to recruit his successor.
According to Sky Sports News, the Saints are now in advanced discussions with midfielder Dan Neil, whose current contract expires next week.
Neil played an important role in Ipswich’s promotion-winning campaign to the Premier League last season but is expected to leave the club once his deal officially runs out.
He has reportedly become Southampton manager Tonda Eckert’s primary midfield target as the Championship side attempt to secure him on a free transfer during the current window.
Reports claim Neil is edging closer to completing the move and could soon officially put pen to paper.
With Charles seemingly heading towards the exit door, Southampton appear determined to have his replacement ready as quickly as possible.
Leeds May Need To Balance The Squad
Should Charles eventually arrive at Elland Road, Leeds may also need to reduce their current midfield numbers.
Anton Stach and Ethan Ampadu remain integral members of Daniel Farke’s plans and are not expected to leave anytime soon.
Ao Tanaka has also significantly strengthened his position within the squad following an outstanding campaign and an impressive World Cup, making him another player Leeds have little interest in losing.
That leaves Ilia Gruev and Sean Longstaff as the two midfielders whose futures appear far less secure if Charles completes his move.

Gruev also finds himself facing uncertainty.
The Bulgarian international enters the final year of his contract, and there has been little indication that Leeds are preparing fresh extension talks.
