NafisaSpeculation has surrounded Rangers for weeks, but few supporters could have predicted just how quickly events would move behind the scenes.
The Glasgow giants entered the summer determined to close the gap on Celtic and launch a fresh challenge for major honours next season. Following another campaign that ended in disappointment, significant changes were already expected across several areas of the football operation.
Attention had largely focused on recruitment plans, squad upgrades and the club’s wider restructuring project. Rangers have spent recent months strengthening their leadership team, with key figures working behind the scenes to lay foundations for a brighter future at Ibrox.
Yet while supporters were eagerly awaiting news of new arrivals, developments elsewhere have suddenly taken centre stage.
The managerial situation, which many believed had been settled heading into the summer, has taken an unexpected turn.
Rangers and RB Salzburg complete agreement
Rangers and RB Salzburg have now finalised an agreement for Danny Röhl to join the Austrian Bundesliga side.
The 37-year-old departs Ibrox despite previously insisting he remained committed to overseeing the club’s summer rebuild.
His exit comes after a challenging campaign for Rangers, who ultimately finished third in the Scottish Premiership standings.
The Light Blues also suffered disappointment in both domestic cup competitions, losing to Celtic in the League Cup semi-finals before being eliminated by their Old Firm rivals again in the quarter-finals of the Scottish Cup.
Röhl had only taken charge in October after replacing Russell Martin and still had two years remaining on his contract in Govan.
Assurances were given, but situation changed
The German coach had reportedly received assurances regarding his future at Rangers following the conclusion of the season.
However, it is understood that senior figures at Ibrox continued evaluating long-term options throughout the months that followed.
That process has now resulted in Röhl’s departure, bringing an end to a relatively short spell in charge.
His exit means Rangers are once again searching for leadership in the dugout, becoming the sixth permanent managerial change since Steven Gerrard’s departure in November 2021.
Gerrard remains the last Rangers manager to guide the club to a Scottish Premiership title, a fact that continues to underline the scale of the challenge facing whoever takes charge next.
McInnes move nearing completion
Fortunately for Rangers, plans for succession were already well advanced.
The club are now putting the finishing touches on a deal that will see Derek McInnes become their new head coach.
As previously reported, the former Hearts boss has agreed terms on a three-year contract.
Rangers and Hearts are currently working through the remaining details required to complete the transition, with confidence growing that an official announcement could arrive soon.
McInnes arrives with a strong reputation following an impressive campaign in Edinburgh and is expected to play a central role in the club’s rebuild moving forward.
Summer recruitment already underway
Despite the uncertainty surrounding the managerial position, Rangers have not stood still in the transfer market.
Preparations for the new season have already begun under the guidance of chief executive Jim Gillespie, executive director Fraser Thornton, technical director Dan Purdy and consultant Stig Inge Bjørnebye.
That group has been working closely with football staff to identify targets and strengthen key areas of the squad.

Scotland international Lawrence Shankland arrived from Hearts on a two-year contract, with Rangers also securing the option of an additional 12 months.
A clause within his Hearts agreement allowed the striker to move without a transfer fee after another productive season in front of goal.
Shankland found the net 20 times across all competitions last term and is expected to play an important role in Rangers’ plans moving forward.
While one chapter closes with Röhl’s departure, Rangers are already moving swiftly into the next phase of their project.
