Ally McCoist reacts as Rangers complete blockbuster transfer towards ending of the month as player labelled the BEST as Celtic fans could be seen trembling with fears

Ally McCoist has praised Rangers’ high-profile signing of Lawrence Shankland but believes it is “overdue.”

The Scotland striker signed a two-year contract with an option of a third at Ibrox on Monday after departing title rivals Hearts.

A clause in Shankland’s Tynecastle deal – a three-year agreement signed last summer – allowed him to exit Gorgie on a free transfer before a set deadline, and Gers moved quickly to secure a bargain deal, leaving Hearts supporters frustrated.

McCoist, who remains the Ibrox club’s all-time leading goalscorer, is pleased with the addition, although he admits he would have preferred to see it happen much earlier.

Asked if the move was overdue, the talkSPORT co-host replied: “That’s the word I wold use.

“Rightly or wrongly, if they’d gone and got him in the January window 18 months or two years ago, they’d have won that league.

“But it’s a great signing and he’s been excellent for Hearts.

“He’s the best finisher in the country and he might be Scotland’s most natural finisher.

“The best finisher in the country since Kris Boyd I would suggest.

“He’s gone to his boyhood club and I read the statement he made about leaving Hearts the other day there and I thought it was very, very well written and very appreciative of the time he had there.

“He did them proud as captain there and I think he’ll be a very good signing for Rangers.”
