Newcastle have instructed Pope to report for pre-season training this summer. However, the club have already taken a significant step towards securing his successor.
They have reached an agreement to sign Reims goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen as part of a wider reshaping of their goalkeeping options.
According to Shields Gazette, the goalkeeper completed a medical with Newcastle on Monday evening ahead of finalising the remaining transfer formalities.
Newcastle are expected to officially unveil Jaouen in the coming days, a move that would bring Nick Pope closer to a potential exit from St James’ Park.
The Magpies are not actively trying to force him out, but it is increasingly evident that regular first-team football may be difficult to guarantee if he remains at the club.
That situation now presents Leeds with a major opportunity to make their move and attempt to bring the experienced goalkeeper to Elland Road during the current transfer window.
Newcastle are expected to seek a fee in the region of half the £10 million they originally paid Burnley to sign Pope.
