NafisaA section of Celtic supporters have made their feelings clear regarding the appointment of Robbie Keane by unveiling a banner outside the stadium, which also targeted major shareholder Dermot Desmond.
Keane is believed to be under consideration to replace Martin O’Neill should the 74-year-old opt against continuing for another year, and has already held “constructive talks” with Desmond.
They are expected to hold discussions with O’Neill, who guided them to a league and Scottish Cup double during a turbulent campaign. The club are also preparing for alternative scenarios, with Keane reportedly the leading candidate if they decide to appoint someone from outside.
However, the former Ferencváros boss is emerging as a divisive option among significant sections of the Celtic fanbase as the search for a new permanent manager continues.
Keane previously managed Israeli club Maccabi Tel Aviv during the period surrounding the Gaza conflict in October 2023.
He faced heavy criticism upon his appointment, including backlash from within Ireland.
Keane later insisted he did “not want to get into politics” at the time, stating that his role was purely focused on football management.
Bhoys Celtic, a supporters’ group, posted on Instagram showing an image of a banner displayed outside Celtic Park.
It reads simply: ‘Desmonds and Keane f*** off.’
The message was also directed at Desmond’s son, Ross, whose heated comments aimed at fans during the club’s latest AGM in November went viral.
Keane is also said to be willing to include former Celtic captain Scott Brown, Celtic B coach Johnny Hayes, and Stephen Glass in his coaching staff if he is appointed.
Glass previously worked as his assistant in Hungary before both parted ways at the end of the 25/26 season.
Hayes played alongside Keane for the Republic of Ireland in 2016, towards the end of the striker’s international career.
Brown and Hayes were seen attending a Ferencváros match last season, linked to their participation in the UEFA Pro License course.
