Referee John Beaton and VAR official Andrew Dallas have found themselves at the centre of a storm after the independent KMI panel ruled that Celtic should NOT have been awarded the dramatic stoppage-time penalty that ultimately secured a crucial 3-2 victory at Fir Park earlier this month.
The late spot-kick, converted by Kelechi Iheanacho in the 99th minute, proved to be one of the defining moments of the title race as it allowed Celtic to remain within one point of Hearts heading into the dramatic final-day showdown at Parkhead.
Had the game finished level — as the KMI panel now believes it should have — Celtic would have needed to defeat Hearts by THREE goals to snatch the title on goal difference.
Instead, because of the victory awarded through the controversial penalty, Martin O’Neill’s side only required a simple win over Derek McInnes’ men on the final day — something they eventually achieved in chaotic fashion with a 3-1 victory.
Now the KMI panel’s verdict has completely reignited debate over the role officiating played in deciding one of the closest title races in recent Scottish football history.
According to the panel’s findings, the original on-field decision by referee John Beaton to wave play on was actually the CORRECT call.
However, VAR official Andrew Dallas intervened and instructed Beaton to conduct an on-field review for handball against Motherwell’s Sam Nicholson.
Following the review, Beaton reversed his original decision and awarded Celtic the penalty — a call the KMI panel has now officially deemed incorrect.
The verdict stated:
“The majority (2:1) of the panel deemed the on-field decision of play on to be correct. Two panel members felt VAR was incorrect to intervene and the penalty was incorrectly awarded for handball after OFR (on-field review).”
The revelation has caused massive backlash online, particularly among Hearts supporters who believe the decision directly changed the outcome of the title race.
Derek McInnes had already branded the penalty award “disgusting” at the time after reviewing the incident following Hearts’ victory over Falkirk.
Meanwhile, the controversy quickly spread beyond Scotland, with former England striker Gary Lineker famously describing it as “might be the worst VAR decision I’ve seen.”
The fallout became so intense that referee John Beaton was later placed under police protection after his personal details were leaked online.
While the KMI ruling does not alter Celtic’s status as champions, it has dramatically intensified arguments surrounding officiating standards and VAR consistency in Scottish football.
For rival supporters, the verdict will only fuel claims that one of the season’s biggest refereeing mistakes ultimately played a decisive role in where the Scottish Premiership trophy ended up.
