As the fallout from Celtic’s chaotic title-winning showdown against Hearts at Parkhead continues to dominate Scottish football headlines, legendary singer and lifelong Hoops supporter Rod Stewart has now waded directly into the controversy with a brutal reminder aimed squarely at the Tynecastle boss.
The dramatic 3-1 victory over Hearts sealed Celtic’s fifth consecutive Premiership title in extraordinary fashion after late strikes from Daizen Maeda and Callum Osmand turned the game on its head.
But the final whistle was overshadowed by ugly scenes after hundreds of supporters flooded onto the pitch following Osmand’s stoppage-time goal, with Hearts later condemning the incident and claiming players and staff were subjected to “serious physical and verbal abuse”.
Police Scotland and the SPFL have since launched investigations into the chaos, while Celtic themselves released a public apology to Hearts over what unfolded after full-time.
McInnes later admitted Hearts would use the “grievances” from the day as motivation moving forward after watching his side come within minutes of lifting the Scottish Premiership trophy.
However, Stewart appears to believe the Hearts boss may have forgotten his own stance on pitch invasions from the past.
Emailing from his home in Los Angeles, the Maggie May icon delivered a fiery message that has quickly exploded across social media among both Celtic and Hearts supporters.
Sir Rod said: “Oh what a short memory you have, Mr Derek McInnes – only three short years ago you embraced a pitch invasion from the Kilmarnock supporters after they’d secured a league title, you even said ‘they deserved their moment of glory’!
“There is no room for violence anywhere, let alone on the football pitch, and I agree with you and condemn our supporters for the aggravation.
“Good luck next season.
“PS. Karma always gets you!”
The comments immediately reignited debate surrounding the Parkhead scenes, with many Celtic fans accusing critics of double standards regarding title celebrations and pitch invasions in Scottish football.
Back in 2023, McInnes had indeed been part of emotional celebrations when Kilmarnock secured promotion back to the Premiership, with supporters entering the pitch after clinching the Championship title.
At the time, the Hearts boss praised the passion of supporters and insisted fans “deserved their moment”.
Now, following the uproar surrounding Celtic’s latest title celebrations, Stewart clearly feels those previous comments have come back to haunt the Tynecastle manager.
The controversy surrounding Saturday’s finale continues to intensify.
Former PGMOL chief Keith Hackett has warned Celtic could still face sanctions ranging from heavy fines to even a potential points deduction next season, while referee Don Robertson’s VAR audio is reportedly under review after confusion over the exact moment the match officially ended.
The SPFL have already clarified that the game was not abandoned and had officially concluded before the pitch invasion spiralled further out of control.
Meanwhile, Hearts players were escorted straight from the pitch and left the stadium still wearing their kits, without even returning to the dressing room amid security concerns.
Despite the chaos, Celtic lifted the league trophy in front of a jubilant Parkhead crowd as captain Callum McGregor declared the champions had “proved everyone wrong” after fighting back from a difficult season under Martin O’Neill’s interim stewardship.
But with investigations ongoing, fierce debate over supporter behaviour continuing, and now Sir Rod Stewart throwing himself directly into the drama, this fiery Celtic vs Hearts saga shows absolutely no signs of cooling down anytime soon.
