NafisaHearts forward Lawrence Shankland was reportedly struck by a supporter during the chaotic scenes that followed Celtic’s Scottish Premiership title triumph.
The title race went all the way to the final day, with Hearts aware that a draw would have been enough to secure their first championship since 1960 — and the first time in over four decades that the trophy would not go to one of the Old Firm.
However, a late goal, which was given after a VAR review, from Daizen Maeda and then the decisive strike from Callum Osmand was enough to ensure the title remained in Glasgow as ecstatic home fans spilled onto the pitch.
Hearts players were caught up in the disorder and were escorted off the field, but Sky Sports cameras appeared to show Shankland being struck by a supporter.
Journalist Henry Winter congratulated Celtic and manager Martin O’Neill, but added: “Shame on those fans who attacked Shankland and other Hearts players.”
While more football fans condemned the scenes on social media: “Take the title off them for that. Shankland just been punched!”
“Mayhem at Celtic Park. Lawrence Shankland was very clearly assaulted during the pitch invasion. Other Hearts players and staff provoked and targeted by Celtic fans. Absolutely disgraceful,” a second shared.
“Why was the game not abandoned after yet another massive pitch invasion @ScottishFA, @spfl, and @PoliceScotland? Why do you continue to allow Celtic fans to put people’s safety in danger any time they feel like it,” a third questioned.
And another added: “With at least 31 seconds of the game remaining Celtic fans invaded the pitch and Shankland has been assaulted by an invading fan. There has to be action taken as the game was abandoned by the referee!!”
