NafisaLeeds United may have been hoping for a relatively quiet end to the summer transfer window, but events at Elland Road have suddenly changed the picture.
Daniel Farke’s side produced another encouraging performance against Brentford, fighting back from a goal down to secure a 1-1 draw and maintain their unbeaten start to the Premier League campaign.
Yet the result came at a cost.
The biggest concern from the afternoon was undoubtedly Joe Rodon’s early departure. The Welsh international was forced off after just over half an hour after pulling up while attempting to deal with a ball in behind the Leeds defence.
Rodon immediately appeared to feel something in his hamstring before going down, with the Leeds medical staff coming onto the pitch to assess him.
There was little Farke could do other than make the change, bringing summer signing Nico Elvedi into the action for his Premier League debut.
Thankfully for Leeds, Elvedi handled the situation impressively.
The Swiss defender was thrown straight into a difficult contest and had to adapt quickly as Farke’s team switched between defensive shapes during the match. His performance will have given the Leeds boss plenty of encouragement.
But it also exposed something that could become a serious problem over the coming months.
With Rodon leaving the pitch, Farke suddenly had all of his available senior centre-backs on the field.
Tarik Muharemovic and Jaka Bijol were already involved, while Elvedi was now required to play alongside them. That left the manager with virtually no senior central defensive cover on the bench.
The situation at left-back and wing-back was hardly ideal either.
James Justin was being used further forward, while Gabriel Gudmundsson was still not considered ready following his own hamstring issue.
And with the transfer window rapidly approaching its conclusion, those circumstances have seemingly forced Farke to reconsider just how comfortable he is with the size of his squad.
Leeds supporters may therefore have been paying particularly close attention when their manager was asked about the club’s plans for the final hours of the window.
Rather than completely shutting the door on further business, Farke delivered an intriguing response.
He made it clear that Leeds are not planning to go into panic-buying mode, but admitted that the club will remain alert to opportunities before the deadline.
Farke said: “I’m happy in the goalkeeper position right now with the transfer of Michael Zetterer. In terms of outfield players, the group is not too big. Also, we had today all players, all players fit and in training, and you still see that.
“Yeah, for example like senior centre-back options, wing-back options. We don’t have the most, so for that, yes, we will stay awake until Tuesday night.
“One or two more additions would definitely be helpful. But with the players I’ve got, I’m very happy.”
That final admission could be particularly significant.
Farke is clearly satisfied with the quality already available to him, but he has also acknowledged that the numbers are not quite where he would ideally want them to be.
And Rodon’s injury has only strengthened that argument.
The Leeds boss was also asked about the defender’s condition, although there was no immediate diagnosis available.
“It looks like hamstring injury, so it was not possible for him to sprint and to run, it was painful. We have to assess him right now,” Farke explained.
“I hope he’s not out too long because he’s a key player, and especially also in the centre position, we don’t have too many senior options.
“It was a difficult game for Nico Elvedi to come in, and I’m happy how he adapted to this game.
“Thank God, we have him meanwhile with us. But yeah, of course, it would be a big blow if Joe’s out for a while.”
That could be the biggest development for Leeds heading into the final stretch of the transfer window.
The club have already added Michael Zetterer to provide competition and cover behind James Trafford, but Farke’s comments suggest the goalkeeper position is now considered sorted.
The focus has instead shifted towards the outfield.
Centre-back and wing-back appear to be the areas where Leeds could still strengthen, while attacking options could also come under consideration if an opportunity presents itself.
For now, Farke does not sound desperate.
But he certainly isn’t closing the door.
And with Rodon’s hamstring issue arriving at arguably the worst possible moment, Leeds may now have even more reason to remain awake until the final hours of the window — exactly as their manager promised.
