TBR Football can exclusively verify what Glasgow Rangers insiders are saying about Steven Gerrard amid rumours surrounding a potential return to Ibrox.
Glasgow Rangers have been without a full-time head coach since February, when the Scottish Premiership side parted ways with Philippe Clement.
Barry Ferguson assumed responsibility on a temporary basis, but he has since departed along with his backroom staff.
Additionally, TBR Football can confirm which other candidates Rangers are eyeing as possible alternatives to Gerrard.
Steven Gerrard nearing Rangers comeback with more discussions scheduled this week
TBR Football chief correspondent Graeme Bailey reports that Steven Gerrard is nearing a comeback at Rangers.
The Scottish club’s new American investors have been actively involved in the hunt for a new manager alongside incoming sporting director Kevin Thelwell.
Thelwell, who is set to arrive from Everton, has been kept in the loop as the club aims to move forward from Ferguson – who stepped in after Clement’s exit in February.
Several contenders have been assessed, including Russell Martin, Rob Edwards, Davide Ancelotti and Gennaro Gattuso.
Derek McInnes was also considered, but he is no longer an option after accepting the Hearts job earlier this week.
TBR Football understands Gerrard – who has been unemployed since departing Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq in January – has already held discussions regarding a return to the club he led for three years before leaving for Aston Villa in 2021.
Further meetings are expected this week, and Rangers are eager to have their new manager – whoever it turns out to be – appointed BEFORE the END of this MONTH.
TBR Football previously reported that the club’s potential new backers were enthusiastic about bringing Gerrard back to Ibrox.
How Steven Gerrard performed at Rangers:
Rangers named Gerrard as manager in May 2018 following a turbulent season that saw the Ibrox outfit part ways with both Pedro Caixinha and interim boss Graeme Murty.
Gerrard initiated a major overhaul, bringing in players such as Glen Kamara, Jermain Defoe, Steven Davis, Joe Aribo, Filip Helander, Ryan Kent, Calvin Bassey, Leon Balogun and Kemar Roofe during his tenure.
In 2020/21, Rangers clinched their 55th Scottish Premiership crown – their first since the 2010/11 campaign – while also halting Celtic’s quest for a 10th consecutive league title.
Gerrard spent three and a half years in charge at Ibrox, departing in November 2021 to take the Aston Villa job.
During his time in Glasgow, he suffered only 26 defeats in 193 matches with the Gers.
