England manager Thomas Tuchel has commended the manner in which Marc Guehi has managed his transfer deadline day switch to Liverpool failing.
Crystal Palace skipper Guehi had appeared poised to join Premier League title holders Liverpool on Monday as part of an agreement valued at approximately £35million.
The transfer, however, never materialized as Palace were incapable of securing a substitute for the defender.
Guehi has linked up with England since Monday’s unsuccessful deal and he is expected to begin against Andorra in Saturday’s World Cup preliminary, with Tuchel lauding his demeanor this week.
“We had a chat with him and he looks absolutely fine,” said Tuchel.
“He looks very impressive on the field. He has a couple of very impressive weeks behind him on the sporting side and the performance side.
“He is the main driver of Crystal Palace’s success. He is the captain and the leader. He played very impressively at the end of last season and at the start of this season.
“He continued exactly like this in camp, so it was very impressive. He handles it with respect and with grace, and with a brilliant attitude.”
England struggled to a 1-0 victory against Andorra in June and they faced criticism for their display.
Tuchel has encouraged his team to perform with greater “energy” and “enthusiasm” this week, but he has also emphasized how it will not be simple to dismantle Andorra’s backline.
“We always have to balance our expectations because Andorra is a well-drilled team,” said Tuchel.
“I know it sounds, maybe silly, but it is like this. It’s a well-drilled team in a 5-4-1 [formation].
“They know what they are doing. They do this for eight to 10 years, I think, with the same coach. They will know everything about us, because everything is available.
“They will be very well prepared, so it can also feel a little bit like chewing gum to break a block like this down.
“But, in general, we have to play with more energy. We have to play with more enthusiasm and, so far, I am pretty sure that we will.”
